PG-13 (and tamer) sci-fi and fantasy
I have watched all of the movies that I can think of.... that he would appreciate. That means no older stuff that will have him bored and rolling his eyes.
List all the stuff you can think that an 8yo boy would like of for us guys to watch.
I will let you know if you hit on something I haven't thought of, but I bet you wont.

Some older stuff is probably interesting enough. Such as:

I second Time Bandits and The Ice Pirates.
I had also thought of Logan's Run, but that might get slow for a kid. Plus, they're remaking it soon, so you can wait for that.
I will contemplate the question further.

Off the top of my head, things we have already watched:
All the Marvel stuff.
All the Stars, both Trek and Wars.
LotR and Hobbits
Nolan's Batmans
Both recent Supermans and Chris Reeve's first one
I, Robot
Lost in Space
Red Planet
Mission to Mars
Soldier
Waterworld
Super 8
Cloverfield
King Kong
Doctor Whos
2010
Reign of Fire
There are more, I am just not thinking of them.
I have considered Time Bandits. Not sure if he'd like.
I think you are feeling nostalgia for Battle Beyond the Stars. Even when I was little I remember it being very cheesy.
Been 20 years since I have seen Ice Pirates... isn't it a little racy?
Logan's Run... that was indeed a fave of mine when I saw it when I was like 6. Not sure how he would respond to it. He even find the original Star Wars to be kinda dull, because it doesn't have the flash of the newer movies that have existed all his life.
Face it... him watching a movie from 1977 is like us watching a movie from 1944. We would probably not appreciate it at 8 years old.

D.A.R.Y.L.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind
<s>Weird Science</s> Wife vetoed this. Most of the movie is about trying to get laid.

How about tv series?

<s>Stargate</s>
Venture Brothers
Samurai Jack
Babylon 5 - He always gets distracted by poor cgi. This might make his head explode.

Maybe it's proof that the dude's writing sucks so bad, even preschoolers can figure it out.TPRJones wrote:Huh. He might be defective.GORDON wrote:Firefly At the age of 4 could not understand why space cowboys were cool. Will try again eventually.
Can you return him for a different one?

Caligula
Fritz the Cat
BC Rock
(I get bonus points because two of those are animated.)
Obviously, you'll be taking him to see the new Godzilla movie, yes?

Obviously, skip the three I listed above because...boobs and violence. Although, if you adults haven't seen them, they're an experience. BC Rock is one of the most underrated films ever.
How about:
Jurassic Park
Back to the Future
Ghostbusters
Field of Dreams (father-son movie)
Forest Gump
Holes
The Karate Kid
October Sky (Highest screening rating for a movie. Ever)
Indy trilogy (fuck that new one)
Princess Bride
Silverado
War Games
Willy Wonka (the original)

Might be time to introduce him the the great American western genre as well. Watching The Fifth Element might have him thinking that love solves everything, where as the Outlaw Jose Wales will correct him by showing it's actually a couple of Colts that will more likely solve the issue.
