Pacific Rim

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

This box office reviewer has the same thought as Malcolm.

Why did it get beat by Grown Ups 2?

Half way through the film a couple dazzling urbanites directly behind us had a 4 minute conversation about what one would get the other from the snack bar, in conversational volume levels.

You know, your fancy words aren't hiding your racism, cracker!

I have been digesting this film for a couple days.

Your lack of a post for days, despite this new post claiming we should all see it, gives me pause about wasting the money.

Still, maybe I'll hit a $5 showing next Tuesday.

5% of the reason was to collect my thoughts better, 95% of the reason was because I have been running nonstop since I saw it, including a day at the lake up in Michigan.

Have no fear. This movie needs to be seen.

Opens in Chine July 31 and Japan Aug 9, so we haven't seen the real money, yet.

Although China has already copied it and has sold about a million street copies already, no doubt.

Second viewing was much better. Since I wasn't being overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the "new thing" this time, I was also not being underwhelmed by the character development since I knew to expect it. And because I had no unrealistic expectations this time around, I was able to enjoy the little details along with the 200 foot tall robot moments, which still had me grinning like a little boy.

It was more fun the second time.

I would also like to see a prequel focusing on the Russian crew of the Cherno Alpha. They had more little moments than I thought, I missed them the first time around because I was distracted by the giant fucking robots.

This movie needs to be seen.

Like, in the theatre, or on a nice hi-def screen in the comfort of my own home and booze?

Giant robots vs. Giant monsters = AWESOME!!!!

The rest of the movie from direction to casting to acting to writing to plot development to the logic behind the storyline to the "science" to the ridiculously predictable events to the actual fights themselves, and I could go on here... absolutely sucked.

Yes, the fights are cool, and it's giant robots against giant monsters, but the rest of the film felt like "who gives a fuck"? I honestly think the movie is an insult because I don't think anyone gave a shit about the audience. They probably thought: "Fuck the audience. They're just coming for the special effects." And some did. :D

Yes, it's worth watching, but I have to think they fucked a franchise possibility here with such a shitty effort at giving some substance to their special effects.

Del Toro says they tied the theme into the robot operation, which is why you need more than one person working it simultaneously. Given the reason the kaiju are supposed to be there ... I'll just say I'm getting tired a certain sci-fi cliche which I'll go on about in the spoilers thread after Netflix stocks this mofo.

I finally found a way to watch this that I was comfortable with: on a plane flying to SFO with nothing else to do.

The lady next to me asked me what comedy I was watching at some point and why it had giant robots in it.

Special effects = good
everything else = ahahahaha

basically what Leisher said.

Netflix delivered this today. Will probably watch seeing as how I'm down with a sickness of some kind.

I have a number of documentaries to work through that aren't available on streaming. Pacific Rim isn't, either, or I'd have watched it long ago.

Got to start a spoiler thread for this. A few things annoyed me during the flick.

Giant robots and giant monsters. It sure as hell delivers. Over the top and cliche in a number of places, but still enjoyable if you can overlook the single-digit IQ the military brass and/or commanders-in-chief are assumed to possess. At least they make the same assumptions about the antagonists. I was waiting for Idris Elba to pull a Danny Glover and say, "I'm gettin' too old for this shit." I also think Jaegermeister missed a huge marketing opportunity. That could've been Idris Elba's character's official rank. They could've done jaeg bombs before going out and fighting. And you know that if this shit actually happened, the jaegers would have to be covered in corporate logos and advertising to cover the costs.

"Another kaiju has come through the breach."

"Send in the Google-Apple-Facebook jaeger, Big Brother, and give him Exxon-Mobil-BP-Pfizer one, Slippery Rod, for backup, and ... what about that other one, is it done yet?"

"The one from McD's?"

"Yeah, Ronald McJaeger. It ready yet?"

"Everything except the wig and the big shoes."

"It'll have to do. Send it out."

Sequel not yet greenlit, but considering this made more than double its budget, I think it's a safe bet. Pacific Rim 2: the Job.

Supposedly will contain a jaeger-kaiju fusion-type thing.
