Friends? "We had them say 'We were on a break!' in like 5 episodes and that constitutes a story arc... we are such awesome writers!"

The three dudes on that show might have collectively had one testicle.

I liked Friends too, but best written show? Higher than The Shield? No.

I liked it too, but I can't think of a single reason why it should be on a "best ever written" list.

Well... that list clearly has a popularity/recent bias. Modern Family better written than Flying Circus? Please.

I feel like they would have to break this down by genre, and give comedy it's own category.

The more I think about it, the more I just think lists like this are impossible.

Get into this same shit every time talk devolves into, "Who was the best player in [insert sport name here] over the last 50 or more years," or some variation thereof. And that's sports, shit with measurable results and statistics. This is like arguing over the best 101 pop songs since 1950. The eras that made and considered them classic (sometimes the same, sometimes separate) are typically alien to modern times.

The Wire? Mad Men? Really? I'm not arguing they aren't good. But why are they top ten when they're still ongoing? Fucking Lost ranks above Twin Peaks? Fuck you. I don't recall David Lynch bullshitting that he had everything figured out and that shit would all make logical, scientific sense at the end. Sex & the City even placing?

...so, it's a show about three hookers and their mom?

Anyone?

Lost even being on the list is bullshit.

The first few seasons were very well written, I thought. the ending just sucked balls.

I thought the first season was well written. The following seasons feel like, "Oh shit, we got renewed, NOW what do we do?"

Exactly.

The first season or two were great, but the fact that they only wrote a season, and blatantly lied when they said "it was all based on actual science" and "it's not limbo", pretty much means they don't belong in the top 101.

Plus, how much of our excitement over the show had to do with the original concept and great acting?

I'd also argue that they killed or gravely wounded the genre with their terrible ending.
