Pet Sematary

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

Since I got thru the South Park series DVDs in my queue, I've gotten to a section of real flicks again. This was another flick that I hadn't seen in years. While it ain't nearly as effectively scary now as it was then, this is still probably the best female-helmed horror flick I can recall. Maybe they didn't adapt it from the book precisely, maybe the book'd some plotholes or something, or maybe the internal thoughts of the characters just weren't communicated well enough via the physical acting of the players, but this film felt very hollow & artificial in some places and clunky & unsure in others. I think I blame the actors & screenwriters, though I can't absolve King of any involvement since I've not read the novel in a long-ass number of years. The characters just seemed to be dumbshits, particularly the father.

It's a renter, folks, nothing more.

Verdict : 2 stars.

Coming soon : Malcolm reviews "Duel", "Lost in Translation", and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou." I'm a Bill Murray fan & typically enjoy his performances, so aforementioned reviews may be a bit biased. But I've gotten such fucking mixed responses on these two flicks from various sources that I feel there's got to be something worth seeing in them to evoke such statements.

If the Life Aquatic had been any worse, I would have hunted Bill Murray down and killed him.

I probably wouldn't have killed him, but he would've needed crutches.

I really don't get why people think that movie was any good.

I enjoyed about five minutes total of The Life Aquatic. That's more than I can say for Lost in Translation.

LiT was an interesting character study/slice of life movie. Not great, not memorable, but entertaining enough for me.

TLA was just dumb.

Whoever called LiT "the year's best comedy' is what killed it for me, I think. Instead of being interested as a voyeur of that slice of life, I was angry that it wasn't, you know, funny.

Good friends of mine had already seen it and said it wasn't as funny as people made it out to be. I was warned.
