The Maze (2010)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

The Maze (2010)

Post by Leisher »

Currently on Prime.

I've been on a good run with horror films. 1BR, Books of Blood, Girl House. I'm still deciding if this indy horror continues the run or ends it.

5 friends go to a corn maze only to find it closed. They trespass and decide to play tag. They don't know a psycho is also in the maze and plans to kill them all.

It starts slowly, and once the killing begins it gets rather confusing. The killer must have supernatural powers because he's able to traverse the maze without issue, knows where everyone is at all times, and seemingly can be in different places at once. Additionally, other people show up unexplained, including a crowd out of nowhere, and there's unexplained lighting in a corn maze, but only when the plot needs it. The killer also, despite being a normal human, has the incredible ability to not utter a sound even when stabbed or burned. I wouldn't point this out, but it's rather key to the plot. There's also an interesting moment for the audience when everyone is dead and there's still 30 minutes left. There's also a montage of all the very tame and bloodless killing that the sole survivor pictures, which is pretty interesting considering she wasn't present for any of them. Also, there's a kill I've never seen before when the killer is facing his victim, eye to eye, and they're grappling, yet somehow slashes his throat...in the back. The victim then acts like this is a critical injury that he cannot recover from. Such an odd choice, and makes me wonder if the filmmakers ever took biology.

All the cop stuff is complete trash. It simply doesn't work like they make it so it fits their story. Props to the old guy cop (the chief?) for actually trying to act.

It's not a terrible effort or even a bad film, but I can't recommend it unless you are, like me, forgiving of indy films for having small budgets and less than competent actors. Still, the weak plot and poor editing/direction are inexcusable.
