I just started this series recently... they are from the 1980's so are among his earlier works. It is a weird alternate-history story, taking place in the late 1700's, America. I think the change in the story is that magic is a lot more real, without being all Gandalfy. A dude has a "talent" for cutting wood. A woman knows a spell to protect a house from harmful strangers. That sort of thing. Of course, the Anglican Church is having none of that... it's witchcraft and it goes against God. It was interesting to me reading the first book and seeing how Card is making the Church the enemy.
Anyway, I bought the second and third books used from amazon for a penny each, and they sent me an autographed 3rd book, first edition, from 1989. Woot.

I still like these books despite my peers' efforts to make me personally hate Card. He's still writing the series, by the way -- it only began in 1987.
If you haven't read Card's Enchantment yet, it's in the same folk-magic style as these but Slavic-flavored, with a dash of Connecticut Yankee thrown in. I'd recommend it too.
