Very accurate descriptions. The Martian is a bit of a throwback to those old hard sci-fi books, but with actual well-written multidimensional characters as well.

I've read everything Asimov wrote for his first 20 years, and have read so much about him and his process, that I might as well be considered an Asimov scholar (not really).... and I can conclusively state that he himself admitted that he only really knew how to write about scientists, and he absolutely DID NOT know how to write women. That's his own admission.

Asimov was always one of those dudes I felt required to like. Not that there's nothing there, but he's not in my upper tier of favourite authors. He was the most British American author I've ever read. His constructed worlds are places I think I'd try to escape from, even the nice ones.

The other day I borrowed the "I'm going to have to science the shit out of it" line.... when the cub scouts were doing their thing in my back yard, and the scouting rule for camping is "Leave no trace," I told them they were going to "Leave no trace the shit out of my yard."

I started reading the book today on my flight to Vegas, got halfway through, and it's pretty awesome so far.
