Some things that bugged the fuck outta me :
- If you're taking you're potentially psychologically disturbed kid to a haunted ghost town, why do you go ALONE?
- When the cop pulled her over by right before the turnoff to Silent Hill, why in the fuck does Rose stop then decide to jet off? Why not just fucking wait to hear what the cop says before kicking off a high speed chase?
- If a no-armed, clearly not alone & very dangerous lava-spewing creature showed up, why would you split off from the cop w\ the only weapon? Why would you run away from the only other sane person you've met? Why would you run away if you were trying to find your daughter?
- The detective said that the chick cop'd spend a couple days in Silent Hill rescuing some kid from a drain pipe. If so, then there's no way she could've avoided the darkness. & in that case, why was the cop so fucking surprised when the supernatural beings started showing up.
- Why would Rose continually chase after the kid? She was clearly in earshot, but wouldn't stop whenever her name was called. Some shit was definitely up, but Rose just keeps following her deeper & deeper into the city.
- When Rose & Cybil first enter the church & Rose's necklace gets ripped off, why didn't Rose immediately pick it up after the hostilities'd ended? A picture of your lost daughter that you give enough thought to to wear around your neck. Yea, you'd just fucking forget about it five seconds after it's on the ground.
- When Rose is getting shoved into the elevator to find the Reaper, the cop beats the shit out of the three goons so Rose can get into the elevator. Soon as Rose's in, the cop just fucking gives up. What the hell?
- In the final scene in the church, Rose gets repeatedly assaulted by the mob. But everytime they try to restrain her, she just throws them off like they weren't even trying. This is the same mob of people that just participated in the burning of a cop & the pre-burning ritual of a kid. & they just let some chick walk right thru them?

Ok, so what did the ending mean? Why was she stuck in limbo?

It's the darkness. Silent Hill is just a burnt-out shit town in the middle of nowhere. But when the darkness comes, it's like some sort of plane/reality shift or some weird shit. Maybe there's some more explanation in the game, but to my understanding, no one that's gone into Silent Hill & lived thru the darkness has ever walked out. Maybe once you get out, you're stuck there till another sequel happens. They indeed let the darkness inside the church. Perhaps it, in some way, "won" and the darkness became permanent since there were no church goers to defend against it. Ain't no way to leave then.
Course, this is just speculation. I got no fucking idea why the writer did that shit.

Damn, now that I go back & look at all these plot holes, this movie seems significantly less cool. What the fuck was the writer smoking?

Been looking around for other discussion..... two things became clear: the writers intended for a lot to be left unanswered, and, well, one thing became clear.
The other speculation I saw was that the mom and the cop were dead as soon as they entered the town, as was everyone else. It was just their souls running around battling stuff. Which is why there wasn't a happy ending... dead is dead.

Souls battling shit? Eh, I don't know how much I buy into that one.

Have either of you guys played the video games at all?
I had to watch my boyfriend play most of the recent one and he showed me some of another, not sure what number it was.
The games were scarier than the movie. I went in, thinking it was going to be pretty scary. I think the scariest part was when she(mom) like tripped over something and it made a loud noise down in the sewer area. I saw it in the theaters, so I'm trying to think back.
Anyways, I wasn't all that impressed and assume the reason she was still in the darkness and they left it like that, was to make a sequal.

No. I saw one, once, for a few minutes, several years ago.

That's probably correct.
I gave this flick too much slack. It wasn't that great, but it's one of the best horror flicks released in recent years. If that ain't a comment about the state of the genre, I dunno what is.

Many of your points I agree with, but there's a few I think I can make sense of:
If a no-armed, clearly not alone & very dangerous lava-spewing creature showed up, why would you split off from the cop w\ the only weapon? Why would you run away from the only other sane person you've met? Why would you run away if you were trying to find your daughter?
I can kinda understand this. Cybil had not been reasonable about the situation at all, and was trying to drag her away to abandon her daughter. Although the biggest factor is that Rose isn't all that bright, I can see why she would make that choice.
The detective said that the chick cop'd spend a couple days in Silent Hill rescuing some kid from a drain pipe. If so, then there's no way she could've avoided the darkness. & in that case, why was the cop so fucking surprised when the supernatural beings started showing up.
Not so, she probably wasn't in the fog before, and if you aren't in the fog then the darkness doesn't get you either. Remember Christopher and the detective spent quite awhile walking around the town trying to find them, even when there was darkness, and never saw anything unusual at all.
In the final scene in the church, Rose gets repeatedly assaulted by the mob. But everytime they try to restrain her, she just throws them off like they weren't even trying. This is the same mob of people that just participated in the burning of a cop & the pre-burning ritual of a kid. & they just let some chick walk right thru them?
It's possible her semi-posession made her stronger than usual, or gave her minor subconcious hypnotic powers that caused the mob to back off quicker than they would normally. Something like that.
On the whole I liked the movie. As you say, it's no masterpiece, but it's the first half-way decent horror movie release in a very long time. Makes me want to play the games.

Watched it again last night as part of Scary Movie Month, and I like it even better the second time around.
And, all the monsters were real people in makeup... not a lot of cgi. I watched the special features and they got dancers to play the monsters so they'd be able to move weird.
I like that.

Something else I meant to say.... niiice... slooow... camera work. No fast edits.
Maybe the nurses scene.
But for the most part, we're allowed to relish the grotesquery of the town.

The bit where she's first just getting to town & finds that little cache of screeching, midget monsters... that was cool. It's been on the movie channels this month, so I'm getting a disjointed viewing, though.

Maybe my survival instincts are just fucking weird. But the chain of logic goes like this ...
1) Daughter done run away to creepy-ass town.
2) Meet bellicose cop on the outskirts of creepy-ass town.
3) Cop has gun & might know a thing or two about creepy-ass town.
4) Cop tries to drag me away.
5) Some creature, clearly something that doesn't belong in the natural world, approaches & spits lava at us.
6) At this point, there's two options : run away or stay w\ cop.
7) Run away -> sneak thru creepy-ass town I know nothing about w\ lava critters (& possibly worse).
Stay w\ cop -> maybe after the cop is done killing something that spits lava, she'll be a bit more open to all the strange shit going on & will listen.
9) If I'm dead, daughter goes missing permanently.
10) (8) seems to have a higher probability than (7).
& did they figure out before or after lava critter that the creepy-ass town probably don't wanna let them leave? I don't remember.

I think that in this go-round they were either dead as soon as the entered town, or Arissa took them into her "mind" of payback in order to finally finish the deed and get them in their church. She couldn't get in and finish the job without Rose's help. The first time the cop was in the mine shaft keeping the kid alive for 3 days, it was either because she wasn't dead, or Arissa didn't "take her in," or however one would want to explain that phenomenon. So no 'darkness.'
Early on the detective tells Sean Bean, "They didn't even find half the bodies." In my mind those would be the peeps hiding out in the church... so not dead, but taken in Arissa's revenge fantasy dimension.

Intriguing interpretation. Seen it a couple times since ... still not great; but not bad, either.

I just learned that the mom from this movie was the pilot from Pitch Black.
This is still a charming little horror movie. Underrated, I think.
