Very good concept.
The negatives...
1. Why wasn't this talked about at launch? It might have helped some of the negative backlash against the PS3 and how it brought nothing new to the table.
2. PCs gamers have been doing this for years, although it's been limited to in game. For example, the whole thing reminds me of Ultima Online from the social gathering places to the private spaces.
3. More "nickel and dime" costs to continue squeezing customers. I am really curious as to when the market will finally break as consumers have to make choices between luxury items like gaming and necessary items like bills, gas, and food. I mean, if the consoles focus a larger percentage on younger players than the PC, someone is paying the bills for them. How long before parents start cracking down?
I'm not saying this saves Sony's rep, they've got a LOOOOOONG way to go to rebuild trust with consumers, but at least they're showing that they still want to be innovative.
The real questions become:
-Will anyone care if their matchmaking service has a GUI designed like this?
-Will the PS3's small audience grow enough to really make it worthwhile?

Eh, that's what I thought of when I first saw it, but it's closer to UO than Second Life. I mean, if you want to say that it's a Second Life copy, then Second Life is just a UO rip off.
Besides, what comparisons are you making? That it's a 3D world with avatars? Having your own customizable houses? Being able to input your own music into the "game". Because nobody did that stuff before Second Life...
I'm as critical of Sony as anyone, and while NOTHING in this idea is new, the idea of merging them all in the way that they are to the audience that they are IS new.
I'm willing to give credit where credit is due even if it's an evil corporation like Sony or Microsoft.

Eh, I was kidding. Just an offhand remark.
Besides, it's really nothing like Second Life. Second Life has a built in CAD system for object design and a programming language to create functionally automated objects like vehicles, spaceships, discos, and flying attack cocks.
I doubt you can make your own functionally automated flying attack cocks in PS3 Home.

What makes Second Life different from all the MMO games out there is that what you describe is pretty much ALL there is to it.
Same as this.
Every review I've read on it has said it's Second Life.
I'm not a Sony defender (ask Alhazad), but I stand by my comment.
If Home is a Second Life rip off, then Second Life is an Ultima Online rip off. Not much there that can't be attributed in some way to something that was in UO.
Actually, let me put it this way: Calling Home Second Life is like saying the Lamborghini Diablo is a rip off of a horse and buggy. Just because one came first, and technically some things are similar, doesn't mean it's a ripoff. However, if Sony is smart, they steal some ideas from Second Life.
I mean, let's be honest, if a major corporation tried to create its own Second Life, they'd beat the shit out of the original. (Let me specify that I don't mean that in terms of quality.) The mass market doesn't know about Second Life or doesn't care. Not to mention all the problems it's currently avoiding by being out of the mainstream.
Plus, it's a bit too unaccessible for the mainstream. They claim millions of people, but I'd love to see the actual logs of how often those people are in game. I'd be willing to bet lots of them signed up, tried it once and then left. Not to mention all the secondary accounts.
It's the same reason console games sell better than PC games. The mainstream is pretty stupid and they want their entertainment NOW, without having to jump through hoops or having to deal with a big learning curve. On top of even that, how long before a lot of players walk away because they realize they're nothing more than dollar signs for the 1% of the people in game who can actually create things that earn them real world cash?
Sorry, I'm not ranting on Second Life, but trying to make my point.
P.S. I do have a Second Life character.
I doubt you can make your own functionally automated flying attack cocks in PS3 Home.
How fantastic would it be to read an article about flying cocks attacking avatars in Home?
