I'm not great at reviewing movies in any sort of detail, but I agree with much of what is said here to one extent or another.
I would say that this movie should be required viewing for anyone wanting to partake of America II in any form or fashion.

I was there. It was neither light nor a comedy.

I must beg to differ, sir, on three points:
1) Firstly, this isn't really a light comedy. Oh, it has plenty of lighthearted moments, but I'd say far less than half the film could be called lighthearted or comedic.
2) Furthermore, many of the quips in the production will sound familiar, because they are part of the historical record. Hancock & Franklin both are known for their levity. Washington's letters are nearly comedic in their melodrama and are verbatim from his actual letters. And finally the honorable congressman from Rhode Island was indeed a cranky old drunkard, God rest his soul.
3) Lastly, you were not there. You didn't know John Adams. I knew John Adams ... and you, sir, are no John Adams.

In the back.
Directly to the right of (who I think is) Ben Franklin.
Marine Corps Dress Blue cover.
I was there.
It was hot, that July. Damned hot.

Oh, why so you are!
Why are you hiding behind the delegates from New Jersey?

I'm back in the corner so I have a clear field of <s>fire</s>vision for the entire room. I'm also securing access to that door.

Here's an interesting fact for you. Did you know that this picture is often mistaken as a representation of the signing of the Declaration when in fact this is depicting the presentation on June 30th of the Declaration from the subcommittee that drafted it (Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Livingston and ... that cobbler from Connecticut whos name I can never remember) to the rest of Congress?

I never get tired of this movie.
Good viewing for the July 4th weekend.
