Oh, wow. I saw that at a sci-fi convention back in the late 80s. I'd completely forgotten about it.
IIRC, that scene made it into the comic book.

Thought we were going to have an Alexander of Brokeback moment there for a sec.
I can't believe that left any of Hammil's Oscar worthy acting on the editors floor like that.

Yep, I had the Marvel serialization (actually read it before I saw the movie) and this scene was in it. I was confused as hell when I saw the movie and it was gone. That and Han's meeting with Jabba at the docking bay.
