Lucas is an idiot.
I wasn't going to buy them simply because Han doesn't shoot first.
Now I have to hear Lucas explain how Darth Vader wasn't a part of the Force. Does he know the mythology he created anymore?

Greedo still shoots first, too?
Screw that.

I assume that because these are the remastered versions according to articles I've read.

I already have DVDs of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi (the re-released versions).
They don't play really well on my regular DVD player, but play fine on the Xbox's DVD. They were apparantly release in Japan, because the menu is in Japanese. (There aren't any annoying subtitles.)
I'll probably wait until Lucas issues the "Ultimate Mega-Hecka-Platinum Pack" and get that.

I feel obligated to point out that you all have teen angst.

I haven't ever seen the remastered versions of the Star Wars triology. Probably b/c I think the originals were just fine.

Just read that Lucas has changed the cantina scene yet again, and Han and Solo now appear to fire at the same time.
What.
the.
Fuck.
No, seriously, what the fuck?

You mean Greedo and Han? Actually, that's not a bad compromise. Think about it.
Greedo's a bounty hunter, and would be used to dealing with scum who would fire first. Having them both shoot at the same time puts them on the same level. I mean, Greedo did track Han down while other bounty hunters weren't able to so he's got to be a decent bounty hunter, right?
Han knew what Jabba would do if he was caught so Greedo had to know that he wouldn't leave without a fight. For Greedo to be unprepared would be unrealistic and make him a really weak character.
Following this?

Lucas should do what he did in E.T. and digitally remove all the guns from Star Wars. I'm not sure if he can replace them with walkie talkies though. He may have to put something lese in their hands... like CGI frogs that shoot out a long, electric (paralyzing) tongue.

That's easy to solve. Replace every character with Jar Jar. He had a really long tongue, so Lucas can work with that.

Maybe instead of Han and Greedo having the shootout, Lucas can just have them talk out their differences like civilized people.
Then they can both offer a handshake at the same time.

Damn, that's just unforgivable. There's no other way to put it. I'm almost speechless...

I wasn't apologizing for the guy, I was just explaining how one scene was better than it was.
Did I like Greedo shooting first? No. It ruined Han's character.
Do I like Han shooting first? Yes, its the original, of course I did. Plus, it adds to Han's character and he's a central figure so that's important. However, it did make Greedo look stupid. How fucking dumb would a bounty hunter have to be to not know that that could happen?
Both shooting at the same time actually adds to Greedo, while not at all dimishing Han.
I'm still not buying the DVDs.
If Lucas has more good films in him, they won't come out until his kids are grown up.

I've taken the last 24 hours to think about this, and I have to disagree.
Imagine it is 1977, and you're seeing Staw Wars for the first time evar.
This guy... Hand something captain of the... aluminum falcon? just fucking SHOT SOME WEAK GREEN GUY WITH NO WARNING, and then made one of the first post- "i just killed some peep because I felt like it" flippant remarks in movie history. Holy crap. Is he a bad guy? And our heroes are going to trust him? OMG!
Throughout episode 4, 5, and 6, we had a character arc for Han Solo. He went from a real pirate to, basically, a respectable good guy. That original opening scene with Greedo set the foundation for the character. Now, even with Han and Greedo shooting at the same time, it still dilutes the character arc. Before, Han shot some weak, stupid bounty hunter as a preemptive strike. Han was bad news. Now, he barely manages to defeat an equal. See the difference?

Good explanation, GORDON.
I agree completely, except I would have added more cursing.

No, I don't see the difference.
Han still "fires first". He doesn't know Greedo is going to fire.
Greedo also firing just helps his character.
Again, its better than Greedo firing first.
You just fear change.
On a similar note, I cannot imagine Lucas could have ever made Empire if he had made the trilogy in order. It probably would have ended with Luke and Vader sitting down to discuss their differences over tea.

So who is a more dangerous person... the guy who kicks a dog, or the guy who kicks a puppy?
Posted: Fri Sep 10, 2004 5:23 pm
by Leisher
The man who kicked the dog is more dangerous, obviously.
You'll say a man who kicks the puppy is more dangerous because hitting something cute and helpless apparently equates to being some macho hero. However, that's bullshit. It only shows an immature and weak person. Someone with no self-esteem, confidence or strength of character to stand up for himself in the face of an equal challenge.
That's not Han Solo.
Meanwhile, the man who kicked the dog, doesn't fear the dog's attack. He's brash, cocky, confident, and able to defend himself. Yet, he's still immature enough that he hasn't grown out of hurting lower lifeforms.
