Publisher is giving a bonus if developer can get the PC game out by the end of the year.

Heh, was just reading that.
I feel kind of bad for the peeps at 3DRealms... Duke3D was so well done that they had to top it... or at least do as well... with the sequel. But then Half Life was released, and the bar got higher so they scrapped the work on DNF... and then Team Fortress... Counterstrike... Unreal Tournament.... Farcry....
The bar keeps moving and they just can't keep up.

I never thought that they should have worried about half life and the likes. Yes they are both FPS so there will be the comparisons but I think that Doom, Wolfenstein, and Serious Sam are the games they need to worry about topping.
When I think of playing the new Duke Nukem I don't really think about the mood or story or realistic physics. I'm thinking of huge ass monsters, big explosions, half naked chicks, and 32-64 people running around firing rocket launchers everywhere.

I'd be a little concerned about the stability of a game that came out quicker because of a bonus incentive.
I don't disagree with the principle of the idea, but too big of a carrot might lead to greed over-riding ethics and sense of pride in the product.

Yeah, but this is DNF, the joke of the industry. It has been "a year from completion" since the late 90's.
Without this monetary incentive, it might slip to 18 months from completion, and we don't want that.
Hey Leisher, remember when I was using DNF screenshots as pc wallpaper back in '98?

Holy Jesus.
Someone contracted & built an aircraft carrier? All three Thief games, the days of 233MHz processors? Good goddamn. Just good motherfucking goddamn.
