So I saw a message scrolling across the bottom of my screen last night while watching AS, that said that after Sept 15th, it would be required to have a digital box to view channels.

I assume this is the analog/digital switch. I thought I was not going to be affected, as I didn't have rabbit ears. But it sounds like I HAVE to have a box, and as I am have been getting sweet sweet free cable for 6 months by just randomly plugging my tv into the wall jack, I suppose that is going to end.

Am I right? Or is was it just a scare tactic to try to get me to call in and ask for the "Free" equipment?

Typically if you have cable you won't need a converter. However your cable company may be killing it's analog service and going totally digital, in which case you would need one of their boxes to convert the signal for your television. And that's one of their specific boxes, because they probably have their own specific signalling system and boxes that call in to the home office to verify you have service.

If that's what's going on it's only tangentially related to the broadcast changeover. There's nothing requiring cable companies to go totally digital, but some are.

Well, the analog/digital switch already happened, so that's different.

My VOIP provider just told me they were shutting down (AT&T). They want to move me to some other AT&T service. I currently pay $25/month. The new one is $45/month.

Their reasoning was that I could get uVerse now cuz it was deployed to Raleigh in December.

Just got some snail mail from TW that they are adding a few channels, and rearranging them to be grouped logically across the dial.

Plus, as more and more people around me switch to DirectTV/Dish Network, my signal seems to get better and better. Sweet.

The banner across the bottom of my screen is on more and more frequently.

It only affects cable shows though, so I will still get basic networks. I figure I can live with that for 6 months, and just hulu anything else.

Does anyone have Directv? I'm almost convinced to sign up with them to get the NFL Sunday ticket free for 5 months - I just don't like the 24 month contract thing.

DirectTV is hit or miss depending on who you ask.

I know some folks who love it and others who hated it and went back to cable. Reception seems to also be very hit or miss depending on your location, where you install the dish, weather, etc.

I have a major problem with them because when they first hit the scene, they were blatantly lying in their ads and to their customers. They were telling everyone that you could get all these channels including the major networks and local news. That was a lie, and yes, they knew it.

Local channels who had deals with the networks weren't on DirectTV or the Dish network. I don't remember the "why" of that situation, but it was nothing that would be resolved quickly. I do remember that it was the satellite networks' fault. Compound that with the fact that your local affiliate "owns" the rights to everyone in their broadcast area. See the problem? All satellite subscribers were being told they'd get their local news and the major networks when, in fact, they couldn't get either. So you had all these folks brand new to satellite thinking they'd get every channel imaginable only to find they couldn't even get ABC, NBC, FOX, or CBS. The satellite companies claiming to their customers that all they needed to do was write a letter to the local affiliate asking for a waiver, but unless the person legitimately couldn't receive that affiliate's signal, the waiver request would always be denied.

Point being, don't trust the satellite companies.

As for the NFL Ticket, I know there's a movement out there to get it offered to cable subscribers as well. Wasn't Congress even involved with this due to unlawful business practices?

I don't trust any of them which is why I've been debating this since February. They keep telling me how great they are, but 24 months is a long time if they do suck. They did say I can change the package any time during the contract - so I wouldn't be stuck in the high dollar package once the 5 months is over. Talked to a rep online and I think I might just check them out. I also want to change my internet service and don't have a home phone line - so I'm not sure what they offer and they said they have deals with different companies and they would direct me to them once I sign up for their service.

you can change the service but i do not think you can downgrade. look into the internet service before you sign anything also. i am sure you need it for work.

They said I could downgrade and I don't have any internet service right now but will have a work laptop soon that I will need to have some kind of internet - but without a home phone line and not wanting to deal with Time Warner - I seem to be limited.

You did - then I got mad at Time Warner for continuing to raise the price of internet. They were up to $44/month - each bill was going up for the same service for no reason. Figured I could get it cheaper and since I wanted to get some kind of paid TV service, we won't be watching the movies and stuff as much online and could go with a cheaper internet service. The bundles they offered me were more than Dish or Directv and didn't even give me as much.

Ok, I was just worried it still didn't work after I fixed it.

If you need the bandwidth, it can be hard to beat cable internet, for the price.
