Kids are stupid. A small pecentage eventually grow out of it.

The rest become Democrats or Republicans.

Or commies, hippies, socialists, yuppies, followers of the Kook, Scientologists, etc. If you've got a vice or bad understanding of something, there's a misdirectional organization to lead you astray.

Most kids have a lot of free time in college. Most are also trying to assert an identity for themselves. Put the two together and this is what you get.

Columbia University students are doing a hunger strike to "encourage more ethnic studies" and protest the university expanding into Harlem.

I've never understood how a hunger strike gets results. How is it any different from holding your breath until you turn blue? Does anybody really seriously think, "That mean old Columbia is letting those poor kids starve to death?"

When I was of college age I volunteered my life for these jackholes to act the fool.

Oh, and I thought about and participated in fornicating with women.

A lot.

Actually, I'm quite certain the majority of male college aged protesters are only there for the women. In fact, I'd bet serious money on it.

I almost threw that in as a 3rd part, but two seemed simpler.

Maybe the problem with american college kids today is that they feel the urge to... fight... change... be progressive... for/against SOMETHING, but the reality is that life in America (for a kid in college) is pretty cushy these days, so they have to invent problems.

I've always said that mndatory military service... which includes travelling to far-away shitholes where people have REAL problems, would be a good thing.

No thank you. If the gov't thinks that, w\ all the other shit they already tell me to do, they also get to tell me when/if I joined some branch of the armed services, they can suck my balls.

They can either wait till the Chinese invade California or till they stop some of the bullshit they currently pull.

Service Guarantees Citizenship!

Were non-vets considered second-class citizens, you might've an argument. As it stands, there's no chance in hell military service & citizenship will ever be necessarily related. This is neither Rome nor a Heinlein novel.

Just wait til I'M in charge, then. Fortunately most of you dtman pukes will get a deferral.

'Course keep in mind that if you did that, then the definition of "service" would also change quite a bit, since we really don't need that many soldiers and you'd have to let anyone that wanted to try for citizenship have a shot at it. The postal sevice, civil municipality employees, and pretty much everyone else working for government that aren't political appointees would all be classified as "service".

Yes. I know I implied it, but "federal service" does not strictly mean "military."

We're getting a bit off topic, here.

What American college kids need is a slap in the face by reality. I'd bet money that none of the American activists are kids who struggled to get out of the ghetto. It's the bored, spoiled rich kids.

Yeah, I said it.

I've seen enough reality. I ain't never crawled thru a minefield nor've I really ever felt the need to do so. Their brains are too disconnected from the rest of the world. While fighting third-world guerrillas would certainly change one's view of things, it ain't the only way.

I think of shit this way. We got assloads of things that can tell you damn near any information you want, but few books that can tell you which info you should/might want to know.

Emphasis on history & select philosophies in the education system could change this over enough years.

I've never crawled through a mine field, either. Nor have I directly engaged in combat with 3rd world guerillas.

Goddamnit, I was just saying them things as examples. Certainly you've been deployed in a foreign territory where some armed portion of the population might decide to attack you w\ deadly force.
