Yeah, so does raking leaves.

I ain't getting shot at for the status of first-class citizen for living in the borders of my country. Least sure as fuck not cos the gov't says I should. Maybe if someone was attacking a decent microbrewery, though.

Then......... maybe you shouldn't have a say in the activities of those who DO volunteer to get shot at?

Just making the argument.

& were it not for the dumb-ass way war is waged nowadays, according to rules in internat'l treaties, I might be more apt to fight & die for my country if the only folk I gotta answer to is my country, not the fucking Geneva convention.

My country will be beholden only to internal charters, Foreign entanglements will be outlawed.

Soon as you get that country going, gimme a call. As it stands, I make the military run more smoothly when I remove myself from it.

Actually I have often spoken about how if one wanted to make "service to one's country" mandatory, then a 6th branch should be created.

Those who wish to serve in the traditional sense can join the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marines. Those who wish to do something military, but not necessarily in a war zone can join the Coast Guard.

For peaceful types a sixth branch could be created.

Give 'em the same physical and skills training sans fighting and weapons stuff. Their mission could be purely domestic.

Natural disasters are the most logical primary mission. Forest fires, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. all could benefit from a 6th branch dedicated to provided trained bodies for fire fighting, food distribution, looting prevention, etc. It'd help to take some of the pressure off a strained National Guard.

Another mission could be beautification projects. Trained bodies do landscaping, garbage cleanup, graffiti cleanup etc. in areas that need it. They could also co-ordinate with local authorities to help remove crack houses and such.

Leading to yet another mission, neighborhood watches. Groups could patrol more dangerous neighborhoods, but instead of acting as police, they'd be a deterrent just by being there. They could also carry cameras, notepads, cell phones to call for police or fire, maybe they even have an armed escort or two just in case. (This mission isn't my favorite, but I'm just throwing stuff off the top of my head here.)

There are lots of possibilities, working with hospitals, social workers (that'd change some liberal minds), etc.

Call it the put up or shut up branch. To all the asshats who criticize those who join the military this would be their option to prove they would serve their country. If they chose not to, then they can shut the fuck up.

Just thought of another mission: Welfare monitoring. Teams can go out to put welfare recipients under surveillance. They can act on tips from the community and if someone is found cheating the system they lose their benefits.

(Let me say it before the NAACP screams it even though 75% of people on welfare are white...RACIST!!!)

Yet again, call me back when our gov't isn't run by incompetents. Till that happens, I just couldn't work for them. I'd be ashamed to call them my employer.
