Third, stop releasing films on DVD 2 weeks after they finish their theater run. Set up a rule that doesn't allow a film to be released on DVD until a year later. I'm sure there will be some concern that people might not but it then, but they will. People who buy movies WILL still buy them. Plus, more people will go see films in the theaters rather than wait a year. How do I know that? Because I am a movie addict and I now usually wait for films to hit DVD because I know I don't have to wait that long.

I absolutely, positively disagree with this point, unless they "fix" the movie theatre experience, which I don't think will happen.

My inconvenience of schlepping to a theatre for a huge screen and big sound has to be able to compete with my big TV, comfy couch, 5.1 surround sound system, pause button, and cheap snacks. Add obnoxious people who don't know how to behave in a movie theatre, stupid noisy teenagers, people who can't afford a babysitter, and all of the cardiac specialist doctors who NEED to have their cell phones on and you've just got a shit experience.

I don't want to wait a year to snag a DVD. I'll just have to pirate more.

Yes, point #4 addressed my issues with the theatres, but you really can't do one without the other. I've already stopped going to movies on nights that used to exist ONLY for movies. Now it's mainly matinees with an emptier theatre. And if I can't hit matinees anymore, well then... I guess I need to pirate more. Arrrr.

A year? The studios don't care about movie theatre profits. They want more DVD sales. They get a much higher percentage of DVD sales than of movie sales.

They are all about the home theatre experience.

As for the quality of movies... they just aren't very good any more. Perhaps this is a function of my age, but I don't think so.

1999 was the best year of movies, Ever. That wasn't that long ago. New talent and new ideas made it good. M. Night Shamalayan, the Wachowski brothers, Pixar, Blair Witch Project, Sam Mendes, Spike Jonze, Brad Bird.

Where are the new new guys?

First was really good, the second blew. I think it's all about the directors.

But, I say eliminate theaters all together in the movie release. Sure, sell movie theaters the right to show your movie, but go straight to DVD on everything. That way, people have their own choice on where to see the damn movie. I hate crowds, theaters, and the people in both.

Exactly. I feel like... a chump for paying to watch commercials. It's like, "We charge a lot and we aren't going to shut people up during the movie, but here's 20 minutes of soft drink and cell phone commercials. Fuck you very much, come again."

Yeah. I hate commercials, and that was one of the last good thing about movie theatres.

I used to go 10-20 times a year. Now I go about 2-3.

I have never seen any of them but I think Philip Seymour Hoffman could be a kick ass bad guy so I may see this when a friend gets the DVD.

After getting on the Netflix, I have no desire to ever see a movie in the theater ever again. I personally don't care for eardrum-shattering sound levels, and the big screen is overrated: you can't actually take in everything that's happening. Besides, I'm rich and I can buy a plasma TV if I want to.

I do like the big screen. It's the only redeeming feature of the cinema.

If Hollywood would stop doing remakes of everything that may or may not have made cash back in the 60's and 70's and stopped green lighting sequels to complete and utter shit (Big Mama's House 2?) then MAYBE they would get a better stamp of approval from me. As for right now... I have been to the movies once this year (V for Vendetta on a Sunday afternoon 3 weeks after it opened, nice and empty). And twice last year - Harry Pothead 4 on opening night (reinforced my "the movie experience sucks") and... shit I can't even remember what the 2nd was. The point was, I used to go to the movies all the time. Now I never do. It doesn't help that the ticket prices are now $9 just to get in. Add in the ghetto gangstas, paying $7 for a soft drink (which is mostly ice), and the commercials for shit I don't care about for 25 minutes before the movie starts and it's no wonder why I don't bother to go see movies. I love my pause button and volume control.

Not much really worthwhile has come out lately anyway. Everything I see on DVD after the theatre run I usually say "glad it was only a $2 rental rather than a $10 hassle."
