From here.

At what point are no more major decisions being made? Is the Supreme Court really as relevant as it used to be?

What life-changing decisions has it made to you in the past 10 years?

Certain decisions (like the recent one on eminent domain) are certainly abhorrent, but do they really affect people?

At what point do precedents cover so much that the Supreme Court just doesn't make any large decisions any more?

Soon as they start making laws unrepealable or make judging an algorithmic, formulaic undertaking, I'll agree w\ that. But current laws can always be challenged, & the nines folks on the bench today might see shit a bit differently than the nine folks a few years back. & there's been quite a few 5-4, 6-3 decisions that were controversial, to say the least. Some crazy fucker might want to challenge that law w\ a new defense & I want robes that have a solid foundation for the judicial philosophy rather than, "Well, they ruled on it that way before, so why change shit" attitude.

Well, judicial philosophy is "they ruled on it that way before, so why change shit."
Then things like Plessy v. Ferguson would've stood forever. The law can't be set in stone. It will be forever reevaluated & tested. I want fucking competent, learned, & dutiful robes. I don't want extreme wacko opinions fucking w\ an already fucked up enough legal system.

1999: Fraternal Order of Police v. City of Newark
# 3-0 ruling that Muslim police officers could keep their beards.

Catt: Damn straight.

So what if there's a riot and police need to don gas masks and use gas as crowd dispersal? Make sure to not put any muslim cops on the line because their beards inhibit gas mask use?

THere are masks that work with beards. Just get some of those.

What are the Dem's problems with this guy? Based on the list TheCatt put up, I'd think he's a liberal.

So by extension, muslim Marines should be allowed their beards?

If it doesn't interfere with primary responsibilities, I dont see why it matters?

And, as there are apparently masks that work with beards, still no issue.

That bit of info was new to me. I looked it up, and found full-hood jobbies that I'd never heard of. I still question their reliability as you need a good skin seal SOMEWHERE, but I'll let that go because obviously I can't test for myself.

When I was wearing gas masks the rule was you needed a smooth face for a good seal.

Not sure.

The Marines are huge on uniformity of the troops in ways you've never even thought of, I can say that much.

Police I can see keeping the beard as it's a civilian organization. There is a reason why they call service men GI's. It means Government Issue. Hence the uniformity. Hey lets be honest. They own you for the duration of the contract.

But police may be a "civilian" operation, but like the military, they're still a government operation. I'm not sure I see much of a real difference between a fed gov't employee and a city gov't employee, civil-rights-wise.

Cop: "Hey boss, I want to grow a beard."
Cop sergeant: "No."
Cop: "But my partner Akmed is allowed to have a beard."
Cop sergeant: "He's special; he's a Muslim, and therefore has privileges you don't have. Get over it."

Nope, I can't see how that would breed dissention in the ranks at all.
