From here.

Check-ups are good for peace of mind, I suppose, but it's hard to not feel like a sucker.

It's for the members of the doctor's union, the AMA.

It's also CYA so that if something did happen they doc has his bases covered.

They act like gods/we treat them as gods, then when they prove they aren't, we sue them.

Doctors are arrogant and patients are stupid.

Yup, I agree that the whole thing is based around avoiding lawsuits. It's much better for the doctors to make you pay unnecessarily up front than they pay out for a court case because some dumb bitch can't show a modicrum of self-control when it comes to pre-natal care.

They will allow you to take still pictures in the birthin' room, but no video.

I asked, and they said "we don't want malpractice on video" without actually saying it.

I would, but they've got my wife scared to death of the process, so her mind is made up.

I never asked about the video camera. In fact, I gave a CD of the video to one of the doctors afterwards and he was surprised that I had a camera. Heh! It made me wonder what their policy was.

Does your digital camera take video? Just get a big memory card for it.

Yes, my new camera does do video...

But really, I don't even want to look at it, much less take pictures or capture video of it.

Gross.

Yeah, no video for me, but I worry about a hospital that limits camera usage to avoid lawsuits. If you do your shit right, you won't have any problems.

Insurance rates for doctors are getting so high that many are leaving their professions to take safer jobs related to medicine.

Actually, my wife's OBGYN, who is considered to be one of the top people in the field in Toledo, is leaving the practice due to the insurance costs. He's going to focus on menopause and basically consult and give lectures. He'll make more money and pay no insurance costs.

He loves his job as he loves children, but he can't afford to do it anymore. (his words)

Hooray for the lawyers and insurance companies, forcing good medical providers out and keeping incompetents in.

I'd blame the juries who actually are the ones who award these millions of dollars. I want just one of them to get smacked with $500,000 out of pocket the next time they screw up something at work.
