Minor point: Smith believe that people did act in their own best interests not needed to.
And I think there may be 5 readers not 4.

On the same vein:
I was just reading the AFL-CIO's opnion of anti-union Wal-Mart. As you can guess, the unions hate Wal-Mart.
They have what they hate about Wal_mart all broken down and organized.
http://www.aflcio.org/corporatewatch/walmart/
Here's their frst argument:
Wal-Mart's low prices don't come cheap. In fact, each Wal-Mart store employing 200 people costs taxpayers approximately $420,750 annually in public social services used by Wal-Mart workers whose low wages and unaffordable health insurance mean most of them are among the working poor.
So... is this Wal-Mart's fault? The government already sets a minimum wage.
Oh, yeah, now people want a "living wage."
Personally, I guess I'll trade higher taxes for "public social services" than be forced to pay higher prices for goods at a mom-n-pop store.

And I almost mentioned the economic theory of that guy played by Russel Crowe in that one movie which claimed... something about getting better results by working together.
But thanks for the clarification...been almost a decade since my last econ class.

Still, that $6,000/yr is cheaper than actual health insurance and union workers. That translates to roughly $3/hour per employee.

Ah, the living wage, there's a petition here in Memphis going around about that....$10/hr with benefits, $12/hr without.
Yah, what'll that do to small business?
What about inflation? We'll be the San Francisco of the south.
Morons.

Given the demographic makup in Memphis... if "those people" can be bothered to get to the polls, 'living wage' will EASILY pass.

The dissidents want to see less money spent on politics and more on organizing and recruiting. On an individual level, a lot of union members are conservatives, many Christian conservatives, and they are sick of paying dues to an organization that has been a rubber stamp of the left and the Democratic Party.
