From here.

Personally, I'd rather know how to patch up a sucking chest wound in the woods than be able to explain the O2/CO2 gas exchange process in the alveoli. The fact I can do both just makes me a double-threat. ;)

On the advice of counsel, I "Lucas'ed up" the front page post to make my parable a little easier to follow.

I could have used the "Old bull/young bull" parable to illustrate intelligence vs. wisdom, but I wanted to use something original.

I believe Heinlein wrote something like, "People only learn by experience, if they learn at all."

Maybe if I feel like it, I'll look that up. I know it's in Time Enough for Love.

In the same conversation, a different person told me that he was shocked that I would vote for Bush, because I seemed to be a pretty intelligent guy.

I remember going through the same thing in college. You can substitute the word "intelligent" with "nice" as well. I went to a couple fairly liberal colleges, and conservatives were seen as a cross between Governor Tarkin and The Emperor. They believed that strict action from a conservative was out of a desire to inflict cruelty and/or gain personal power, not a consequence from a previous action or a short term sacrifice to reap greater good.

I've had a similar view of Democrats. "You're voting Gore? But I thought you were smart?"

Yep. But whuddayagonna do. They just don't get it, and probably never will. All you can do is keep them from getting you thrown into a republican concentration camp for the good of The People.

I agree.

Besides, anybody you can win over with a five minute in-classs discussion isn't worth having on your side anyway.
Most people need to live live and learn lessons on their own.

That's why people get more conservative as they get older.
