Only half of that big hotel structure is still standing.
The explosion is thought to have been caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored for six years without safety measures at the port, according to Lebanese President Michel Aoun.
I guess the head customs guy there has a paper trail going back several years of him warning officials that dangerous materials were being stored at the port.

Went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole last night to learn 1) Nitrate is normal thing to ship on the high seas and be in ports 2) The US had a similar 2k ton Nitrate explosion in the port of Galveston in 1947, which similarly leveled it.
