Just a story that I want to vent about.

So last night I purchased an X-Box with some birthday money (I got it early). I figured what the hell, it completes my sweep of all relevant consoles/gaming systems, and there were a few X-Box exclusive games that I really wanted to play. So I went to EBGames and bought a pre-owned system so I could save $30 and use that towards a new game.

I've purchased lots of trade in games from them and they've always worked well for me. In fact, I've traded in a lot of games for credit and basically walked out of the store with a handful of games for free using that credit. I highly recommend you do this instead of letting games you won't play again collect dust. Just be sure to save the box and such so you get the maximum amount upon trade in.

Anyway, I've never bought a system before and was nervous about it working.

I took the system home and immediately encountered problem #1. The TV I was hooking it up to was older and didn't have audio/video jacks. Thus I needed to go out and get an RF adapter.

I got home and continued the installation. I turned on the power and the system instantly went to a clock screen. I began manipulating the controller, but noticed nothing was happening on screen. Hello problem #2. I ran over to see my S.O.'s cousin to test the controller and borrow a working one. Yes, the controller they gave me with my system didn't work.

I returned home again and plugged in the new controller. I was finally able to change the clock settings. I then popped in Kung Fu Chaos and waited for the system to recognize the game. Problem #3 reared its head as a "Cannot read the disk" error. So I tried again, only to encounter the same error. I ejected the game and tried another to no avail. I then put in a brand new music CD, and two different brand new DVDs, all failed.

Upon reviewing my receipt I found problem #4, I was overcharged on a game by $2. That's not a big deal at all, but I found it funny as everything that could go wrong, has gone wrong.

The saga will continue today as I return the system. I'm looking for a new system (I don't carry if its preplayed as long as it works) and I'm going to angle for a new controller. Not just one that works, but a new controller. They've changed the style to a smaller well designed controller since the system was first released, so I'm looking for one of those.

I promised myself when the X-box came out that I'd never own a console system built by Microsoft. I'm sticking to that prejudice dammit! Sane or no!

I have never had success with a refurbished system that wasn't an NES. I went through both gamestop and ebgames for a total of 4 PS2 and never got a working one they all gave me DREs.

Also the S controller is the one to get, a bit more comfortable IMO.

I have six Xbox controllers (2 consoles, one of which is all but dead). Two standard, two small (S), and two big-ass generic wireless monstrosities.

When friends come over they complain if they don't get the S controllers, so I tend to take the standard ones.

The first Xbox I had was used. It worked for awhile, but then had trouble reading games. It *can* load games now, but there's not telling when it'll crap out when loading a level. It does play DVD's flawlessly, so it's our bedroom DVD player. In fact, it reads some burned DVD's I have that my regular DVD player can't (Star Wars IV, V, & VI).

My fully functional Xbox was purchased new. I've had no problems at all with it. I baby it.

I got my X-box factory refurbished and I have never had any problems. My buddy got one and he had problems like a year later and sent it in and they sent him a new one.

I called EBGames before heading over and explained the problem.

When I showed up, the guy had another system all boxed up and ready to go. He had put in an S controller and had tested the system himself before I came over to ensure it worked. I was in and out of the store in 2 minutes.

That, boys and girls, is customer service.

I wondered if it was a PS2 and I was remembering incorrectly.

We watched Grosse Point Blank that time, no?

Maybe.....probably, I do attempt to spread the Grosse word as much as I can. I love that movie.
