The better ones can go $50-60 and up. Especially if you want blu-ray support, which I do not.

DVD drive and speakers have arrived. I'm in the midst of cleaning out years of accumulated clutter from my closet and shelf space. Trying to consolidate my useless electronics, appliances, floppies, CDs, etc., and get rid of the fuckers. I believe I may try to sell some cassettes, CDs, and DVDs I got as well as the original XBox with all attached gear and games. Some DVDs will be kept, especially the box sets and flicks that never got an official DVD release (Highway to Hell, Spellcaster, Damnation Alley).

Once that's done, I can:

1) back up files on C drive
2) remove faulty C drive, replace with D drive
3) install the DVD RW drive
4) install winblows on new C drive
5) return faulty drive (still under warranty) and get a replacement

Shit, once that's done I might even reinstall Steam again. We'll see.

Which version if Windows are you installing fresh?

I did Win7 recently, since it is no longer pushing the free upgrade to Win10 on you, I just opened it up and let it do the updates on a fresh install.

Microsoft has broken Win7 so badly that I actually had to google and jump through hoops to get the update process started on a fresh install. Downloading tools and shit.

Broken? Are you shitting me? Ultimate edition of 7 hasn't given me problems before.

It would not update at all until I downloaded some tool from Microsoft, and even then it wouldn't run manually, I had to set it for "download and install updates automatically" and let it begin the process itself. It's insane.

Google is full of people talking about having the same problems.

I'll find out in about two shelves plus change of cleaning to do. Closets done. Space saved is huge.

Half a shelf left. Need to get rid of old books, cassettes, and VHS tapes first. Electronics after.

About 6 months ago took a few hundred cassettes and about 50 VHS tapes to goodwill.

Previous car had a tape deck. About 30 cassettes and 15 VHS. Not bad. Way more old textbooks to get rid of. Lots of burned CDs and crappy software.

I'm going to need to rip off some product codes from my MS buddy. I want to do the reinstall-and-return fest this week.

The collective has apparently assimilated him.

Instead of the codes, of which I know he has a few dozen, he offers me a "genuine" W10 license for $20-something. No word on VS or MSSQL server. I may just hunt down a fucking W7 iso and recycle my current VS2012 instance ... if possible. Why must the simplest things be complicated with excessive bullshit?

Hmm, that handles 2/3. Still the matter of the damned OS.

K. After some thought, I'm sticking with W7 SP1. That takes cares of everything. Since I cleaned out my hotmail inbox today for the first time in 10K emails, I think I'll do the reinstall this week and start the SSD return process. Next thing up on the NewEgg gift card: refurb HP OfficeJet thermal inkjet (if I want nice things printed, there's a FedEx-Kinko's a block away) 4-in-1 copier/scanner/fax/printer. I'm going to need a multi-tiered shelf placed next to the desktop on which I can put the aforementioned printer plus my stereo receiver turntable.
