That chart runs directly against what the NewEgg reviews are saying, far as Seagate and WD go. I do like Hitachi, though.

Article slamming article that image came from.
In his analysis of the analysis, Henry points out that Backblaze’s Seagate results are hugely skewed by two drive models – the 1.5TB Barracuda and Barracuda Green SKUs. Seagate publicly disclosed problems with this drive family back in 2008, so it’s not surprising that these drives have, well, problems, right?

I've only ever had two hard drives fail on me, and both were Seagate. I've also only ever owned two Seagate drives.

I've owned dozens of WD and never had one have any problems.

Suppose I'll give WD another shot. The red is cheap, it's got their next gen IntelliPower thing. Looks like it's got a 3-year warranty, too.

Ended up getting the CPU there because it was cheaper than NewEgg. However, what did not register with my brain was the price difference between the website and the store. But that's the tax, so alright.

The shit they need to answer for is the sticker price on the mobo. Was fucking 33% higher than the website. That made it not worth buying, even with the discount. Going to call the sales dude tomorrow. If they decide to be reasonable and give me the $30 bundling discount tomorrow, I'll go back and pick up the mobo. If they decide to be insane and mark it at $189 with the discount, that might piss me off enough to return the CPU and get a refund.

Goddamn, NewEgg. Putting my power supply on discount and offering a $20 Visa rebate card for the next few days. You brilliant sumbitches. Yeah, I'll snap that up.

Going to try to get all this bought by the end of next week. Means I ought to get everything together by early to mid April.

MC's sales support wait time on the phone is complete ass. Even Xfinity doesn't make me wait this long.

Sanity prevails. For some insane reason, the sticker prices don't match the website prices, but I've been assured that they'll ring up according to the website. Weird.

Found my monitors for a bit cheaper. Let's see if this Iron Egg guarantee works.

Iron Egg price guarantee for "qualifying" competitors only. Whatever. No tax or shipping here either.

Ah, fuck. That site's online checkout is unavailable for 24 hours. Did snag the mobo at MC, though. Will get the monitors and keyboard tomorrow. Give the mouse and vid card another week and maybe the NE gods will grant a discount or something.

Another question. Display resolution.

1920 x 1080 versus 1920 x 1200.

Pros: The vid card can certainly handle the res and make good use of it.

Cons: The premium for monitors that run 1200 is significant, ~40%.

Is it worth it to go 1200?

I really hate using 1080p for a desktop, but then I don't game a lot, I work. I value the extra pixels, though not 40% more. but all my monitors are 4:3 instead of 16:9
It's not me, it's someone else.

I'm going to compromise on either memory or display. I'm leaning towards display at the moment because there will be a LED backlit LCD 24" 16:9 monitor on sale somewhere in the future for $175-200. If I weren't so intent on going dual monitors, I'd probably settle for a single screen. Getting two 23" 1080s lets me spring for another 16 gigs of memory of a particular make and model that probably won't be going on sale anytime soon. Really wishing I was awake in the middle of the night when Wally World's website went to fuck. I'll say it again: would've slammed an energy drink, bought 2-4 of the biggest screens for cheap, picked them up, then made up an excuse to miss half a day of work somehow.

Confirmed that display is going dual 23" 1920 x 1080. I can get two Acers for $10 more than the price of a single 24" 1920 x 1200. Helloooooooo RAM upgrade.

Hey Visa, FUCK YOU. Stop making your cards "secure" by making merchants go through unnecessary steps that cause their transactions to fail. Burn in hell, shitheads.

Yeah, I almost always have to confirm the purchase with my cards when I shop through newegg. Inconvenient, but at least I know identity thieves aren't shopping for computer hardware with my cards.

What is disconcerting is that I can use my Amazon visa at Walmart for $149 without needing to sign my name.
