Hah, seriously. With the LTE upgrade that Sprint just did in our area, the service has been very, very good. At these prices, its a steal.

AT&T slashed prices on their family plans.
It's still not close to Ting or Straight Talk, but current customers are able to get the new pricing.

Ting is still awesome. And now supports up to the iPhone 5.
Last month: $43.22. Lowest monthly bill yet. Just amazing.
On a side note: For those not actually interested in switching. Use the Ting calculator logging in with your account information and your current provider may contact you with a way to save money. Two friends of mine got contacts from their cell phone companies right after using the calculator.

So let's have an update. The wife's phone contract isup and she wants a smart phone.
I've read the thread, but summarize some things/correct me if I am wrong for me:
1. We need to bring our own phone, or buy from them.
2. She can keep her current cell phone number.
3. When my contract is up in a year or so, I can join her plan... is there a discount for multi users?
4. My M-I-L has an old flip phone on our plan, we pay like $10/month just so she has a phone number. We can port that over, too?
5. How are the data limits and coverage, now? How do I know if I get good reception from home beforehand, as I live 15 miles outside of a city?
6. Texting limits? My wife likes to text.

1) Yes, any Sprint-compatible phone will work with Ting.
2) Yes
3) I'll let Catt answer this, I just have the one phone.
4) Yes, the just plain "have a phone" charge is $6
5) I have not yet found any coverage holes, but Houston is a major city. If Sprint works there so will Ting, that's the best judge if you have a friend on Sprint. No data cap, as far as I know.
6) Are you avoiding limits or wanting to set one for her?

#3 It's $6/phone. There are no discounts for multi-users. Other than the fact that it's $6/phone instead of the $30-$40 that others charge.
#5 There are no limits for data. You usage is billed on what you use each month. For coverage, use Sprint's coverage map. Ting does not do data roaming. If Sprint does not have data service in an area, you do not get data
#6 No limits, again, it's all buckets.
My referral link. I guess you could use TPR's, but I hear it gives you face herpes.
Rates
In general, I have found that Sprint's coverage is less good than Verizon's. (shock). That being said, my phone has not failed me when I have needed it.

Ting looking to get into Internet service.
Starting with Charlottesville, VA, unfortunately, and not my town.
I've had it 1 year now. Average bill: $39.60. Service has been very good. Not perfect, but very good and definitely acceptable for that price for 2 lines.

I just noticed that the Google Play store specifies the carrier for devices. My old cell phone on Ting CDMA is tagged with Sprint as the carrier. My new phone on Ting GSM is tagged with T-Mobile as the carrier.
So there you go. Ting GSM service looks to be using the T-Mobile network.

Project Fi from Google for Nexus phones. $20/month, unlimited talk/text. $10GB/1GB of data, rides on Sprint + T-Mobile's networks.

We're moving to Project Fi. Want the additional network coverage of T-Mobile.
But, I really liked Ting. They even made it really easy to leave, posting all the porting information in your account info.

The unlimited talk + texting is nice for $20. The rates are comparable to Ting, but the data is cheaper ($10/GB vs $15/GB for Ting, after the first which is $19). Overall, I would expect our cost to remain about the same as Ting, but with better coverage since T-Mobile is included.
Also the data prorates by individual MB, instead of by buckets. Ting's step function would annoy me when I like 5MB over.

Right now, it only works with 3 phones (Nexus 6, 6P, and 5X)

They killed my grandfathered data plan when I had to add more minutes to my voice plan. They considered it a new contract.
I'll be switching to Ting in the next 6 months. Lots of big-price-tag other things coming up, buying a new phone is about 4th in line.
