Google officials said they will spend the coming months mapping where to run thousands of miles of fiber from Garner to Carrboro – and across Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary and Morrisville – using existing infrastructure where possible. No time frame was given for when actual construction of the network would occur or when Google Fiber would come online locally.

We have several threads where I could post this, but here seems appropriate and most recent.
Cable companies think Google fiber is cray-cray.
More likely they don't want to have to sell their horse and buggy against Lamborghinis.

At least your backups would run faster if you need to restore them?

Did the correct person finally get threatened?

TWC advertises speeds up to 50 MB here. I laugh whenever I see that ad.
even the most data-hungry applications — ahem, Netflix — require only a 25 megabits-per-second connection at the most.
I can get Netflix to work just fine on a cell phone pulling 4G and that's nowhere near 25 MB. I actually met an engineer from our local ISP, and she told me Netflix is really good at limiting the amount of bandwidth needed.

Home broadband adoption has plateaued in the United States as some Americans opt to simply use their phone’s data plans to go online.
Hmm

Yeah, I'm not a fan of that sentence. It implies something that isn't true.
People aren't ditching broadband for cellular. That's ridiculous and would be insanely expensive.

I don't understand Google's new wifi scheme. It won't ever be as fast or reliable as a hard line, so it will never be two comparable services, right?

Wireless has grown tremendously in speed capabilities. But like satellite vs cable TV, no, it'll probably never be the same. That being said, it'll be sufficient for most people. It won't be as fast, but they'll do fiber backhaul to towers (like cell phone system), so if they need more capacity, they can do just more towers, which is a lot easier than more homes.
