Do any of y'all have any experience with those programs that email/SMS you if a computer's WAN IP address changes? I tried to find a free one today and I went through 3 of them before I realized I may not be able to use a free one. 1 had a trojan in it and 2 of them couldn't get a test email to send.

So. Anyone?

So, you want an app that runs in the background that continuously runs some IP diagnostics. Then, if it changes, you want an e-mail?

Like install on the machine you want watched or install on a server that's watching some other machines?

Yep.

For remotely accessing machines that have dynamic internet IP's that change now and then, like on a cable modem. Software that alerts you when the IP changes.

Why not just use a dynamic DNS service that autoupdates? I use dyndns, although it seems their website has changed.

Doesn't that need to be set up on the router?

Well, yes. But it can also be setup on a PC, which is how I used to do it when routers were old.

You could also do VPN software like Hamachi, but that costs $.

When routers first came out that could do that 7ish years ago I tried to get it set up, but dyndns wouldn't update. Maybe they are better now.

Hamachi -> Now costs money.

Pertino free up to 3 devices (and 3 users)

I use this to reach my home server from wherever I am.

I hit the router settings to set up the dynamic DNS stuff.

The available options for which service to update are coded in a dropdown box in the router settings page.

The only option available is dyndns.org, which no longer exists. I could not figure out how to make it accept the new service.

I have had this same experience with 3 other routers. The only option you get is for dyndns. It's like the router people aren't paying attention at all.

There must be a way to add another service...

Dyndns does exist, but it costs $25/year now, apparently. I have the permanent free version *up to 2 hosts* from a long time ago. Is that not still available?

I don't pay for it.

Yeah, after years of being a free service and thus becoming the default for routers to interface with, now they charge. Good for them, but now my router is pissing me off for the same reasons; it only works with the recommended "free" option that is no longer free.

I bet their move to pay-only will lose them their spot as the only option in most routers.
