You know all those photos you've been posting to Instagram for years?
Yeah, we own them and can do whatever we want with them.
Oh, and you can't opt out!
How to delete your Instagram account.

Yup. Facebook still evil.
Don't they already have the rights to anything you post to Facebook? Why is that not a story?

Yeah, they have those rights, and it was a story for a minute, but people lost interest.
It amazes me that we put up with this shit as a society.
What gives FB the right to claim people's ideas and creative work just because they post it to a social networking site so they can share it with their friends and family? How does that translate to "Oh, we own that now"?

People are using their app for free. I have no problem with it. They should have a pay version that lets you opt out of this though.

I don't think that just because your app is free that gives you the right to claim everyone's work, ideas, pictures, etc. as your own.
Now if their app had something to do with the creation of that "product", then I'd be on board with them getting a cut.

Yeah....... but...... if their terms of use say, "You can use this all you want for free, but we have the rights to use anything you upload," then fair game.
Peeps are always free to buy their own domain and hosting space, like I do.

Sneaking things in terms of use and EULAs is lawyer-speak. Fuck both those.

FILTERS. I mean every phone has a camera app built-in, why get instagram except for the filters?

Exactly.
I get that they put those things in their 80 pages of legal speak that nobody reads, but should that give them the right to your work and ideas? Fuck no.
It just seems like they're exploiting a loop hole in the law by trying to claim someone's work just because they posted it.
FB is supposed to be about social media and has a billion or so people using it, so obviously bands want to use it to get their name out. However, if they post an original song, FB then owns it? That's bullshit.
Just because you can hide shit like that in the legalize that is supposed to be there to protect your company, NOT take advantage of your consumers, doesn't mean you should.
Terrible ethics/morals or finding loopholes in the law, whatever you want to call it, it's wrong.

Ultimately all they are doing is further diluting the concept of copyright and legitimate legal rights to use in the collective consciousness. That's not their goal of course, but they're helping further the cause of copyright reform with their tangential evil acts. So ... cool.
