I'm still not sure how the apple market isn't a monopoly.

“Soon prices become so low that the business model for publishers becomes untenable.”

Well, yeah. That's called market evolution. It's what happens when new technologies change the fundamentals of a business. The companies adapt or die out.

You can't stop it. You can only deal with it. Now, go deal with it.

I still prefer hardcovers of books for the shelf, but I envision a more efficient publisher that prints me a copy only when I order it.

5 years later, courts agree with Catt that may be a monopoly

I hate Apple, but I disagree with the ruling.

You can get software onto your iPhone legally without the App store. Fairway Solitaire is exhibit A. I got it years ago via a website. It's been on my phone ever since.

Without jailbreaking? I didn't know that was possible.

It's on the Supreme Court docket.
Apple has to lose this for monopoly law to have meaning.

The libertarian in me is rooting against Apple because fuck monopolies.
The IT tech in me is rooting for them because this could create a nightmare to deal with (see: Droid).

Although, I think it'd be easy for them to get around even if they lose.

"Oh, I see here you have an app installed that isn't available on the App Store. I'm sorry, but that voids your warranty." - HP does that with its printers. If you call for support, you'd better have genuine HP cartridges or they won't help you.

I think the app store must be broken off from Apple. It cannot be their business anymore.

So App Store becomes a third party? If they maintain the same standards, I have no issue with that.

However, how do they then not become a monopoly?

Also, 30%? That's fucking extortion.

I think they'd have to spin off the business completely, and then allow competitors as well.

Seriously. I can only imagine expenses for the app store to run are in the 1-5% range.

That's where the tech in me is screaming "no". Droids are already a fucking nightmare because of viruses and malware. If Apples head that way...fuck.

Although, necessity is the mother of invention. Lots of mobile management stuff out there right now. Just means we'll be locking the fuck out of our users' devices.

The tech in me kinda agrees. I only use google store, but even then, I try to be super cautious. No doubt one of my kids (oldest just got a cell phone yesterday) will download some virus some day.
