That was Sony tech support solution.

My HD keeps having corrupted files and when I try to reformat the HD it won't go any farther than 1%. Safe booting starts the system but the files are still corrupted after safe boot reformat and new files become corrupted. So sony tech support suggested that I setup a wired connection instead of wireless since wired is more secure.

I just agreed with him because I knew it wasn't going to get any better with him and I will call back later and hope to get someone who knows what they are talking about. I need to send the system in for repairs but I have to talk with them before they will do that.

On a side note anyone out there had any HD corruption errors and not been able to reformat?

No problems yet, knock on wood.

That solution reminds me of an old Dilbert strip.

Have you tried double dumping it?

Have you tried turning it off, waiting 10 seconds, and then turning it back on?

Try the cable. Maybe the problem is that your device has to check in with Sony to make sure that you have permission to reformat it as some sort of DRM protection scheme. And maybe it can't connect, so it stops working right. Yes, that's retarded, but then so is Sony so it might actually be true.

I pulled it and installed ubuntu 9 on it and was told the drive had a ton or bad sectors which was my guess. Then I read that ver 9 can be very sensitive and will report bad sectors when there aren't any. So I tried installing ubuntu 10 and 11 and both installed but wouldn't boot up. So I put the drive back in the PS3 and told it to reformat and this time it went to 100% and then it seems to have crashed.

At this point I think it is safe to say the hard drive is dead. Going to best buy to see how much I will overpay for a drive.

I can't imagine how bad my situation would have to be before I bought computer hardware from Best Buy.

Ya. New Egg. You have like 8 other console systems you can play with while you wait for the drive.

If there is only going to be a $5 difference I would just get it now at best buy but if I am going to save any money than I can easily wait.

Problem is I can't find anything small. I don't need 160/320/500. I didn't need the 120 that my old HD was. Really all I need is a 10gb drive and I am set.

Which is why I am leaning towards getting the male to female sata extension cable and just using my 80gb 3.5 that I already have.

Did find a 40gb fujitsu for $5.
