Followup thoughts:

I mentioned before I didn't like that my universal remote can't control the PS3, because the PS3 uses bluetooth...

But I am starting to dig using the game controller as a remote. Instead of having all the buttons a BD player would have, stop, play, rewind, skip ahead, menu, etc... you press one button, and you get all those buttons virtually in a popup display on the screen. Then you use the game pad to select what you want to do. It actually makes it easy to pause/skip/etc in a dark room, because all the buttons are on the screen and you can see them in the dark.

Also, the PS3 is a smart BD player. I can have one disk in, and eject mid-movie because the kid wants to watch something on DVD. LAter, when I put my BD back in, the movie starts where I left off. Even a week later and 5 other disks have been played. SMart.

I have a $30 Insignia DVD player that does that. Pretty impressive.

We get our bonuses in March, and I'm 90% certain I'll be picking up a PS3 at that time specifically so I'll have a Blu-Ray player in my office. the only games that even remotely interest me are the Uncharted series.

I really can't think of anything bad to say about it.

Make sure you have a network connection ready for it.

If you were planning on getting one because the PS3 makes it easy to load/run Linux, don't.

Can watch Netflix on PS3 without a disk, now.

There's a new movie streaming service on the PS3 called "Vudu." I believe it is a Walmart service. There is no subscription, you just pay as you watch stuff. You get to watch one free HD movie if you sign up.

It seems to be Netflix (their streaming side) without the subscription model... which I think would be pretty scary for Netflix.

Haven't had a chance to watch a movie yet, but I'll report back with how good the service is.

Unless the Vudu movies are about $.08 each, there's no way they'd beat Netflix for me. We watch a shit ton of stuff on Netflix. Mostly episodes of various shows. I guess eventually we will have watched everything on Netflix, but then, there'd be no need for either service as we'd have watched everything.

Nah, looked like 3-6 bucks each, and I didn't notice a Netflixesque flat rate.

I guess maybe it is more comparable to cable TV's pay-per-view. Yet another reason why cable TV is becoming obsolete.

Vudu review:

I had a $5.99 credit for signing up, so I tested it tonight. Watched The Expendables. Had 3 choices; watch it at 480P, 720P, or 1080P. 1080P was $5.99, 480 was $3.99. It has a "Test Your Connection" button right there, so I did it 3 times. All 3 tests suggested a different max speed, since it said for 1080P I would want 9MB/Sec download speeds. 3 tests, 3 different results. My LAN is gigabit, and the PS3 is gigabit. Bottleneck will be at the Time Warner cable modem or beyond.

Since I was testing tonight, I went 1080P.

Movie started within 5 seconds, and never skipped/buffered once. The volume seemed very low; I had to crank my receiver up to the highest level to hear it. Could that be a result of stressing my throughput? That would be a new one on me. Anyway, it was Dolby 5.1, so it was fine.

I couldn't figure out a handy pause button, but there was a built-in "Chapter" system like any other DVD/BD.

$5.99 seems a little pricey for what I want to pay for a 1080P movie, but as I dropped my premium channels on Time Warner cable (I wasn't seeing it worth the $720/year I was paying), and don't like being tied down to a Netflix subscription, I now have a "pay per view" system I know how to use for when company is over and they want to watch a movie or something.

I *think* I noticed that before I rented this flick I could have bought it for $16.99, and after I rented it I could buy it for $10.99. I think. I wasn't paying attention to that aspect in a before/after sense, so I could be wrong, but I think I saw that feature and that is nice. I'm not sure if I 'bought' if I would get a permanent DL to my PS3, or just permanent access to the flick to be streamed from vudu. Future experiment.

Playstation Store has a system like this one too, I just never got around to setting it up and trying it.

And of course I may still pull the trigger someday on Netflix, but I heard they screw around with TV series by dropping the streaming of an episode or 2 out of the season, and screw that. Specifically heard that about some seasons of Angel.

The Playstation Network has been down for a few days, and yesterday I was trying to google the issue and getting no hits, but today the press releases went out.

They got hacked, or something, and are rebuilding security.

It has been a hiccup for using apps needing online PSN access, like Netflix and some games, but I haven't actually been locked out of anything, yet. Just let it try to log in once or twice, then cancel it, then I get into my stuff.

Playstation Network still down, and now Sony is admitting credit card data may have been stolen.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011....riocity

I've bought stuff on the PSN. I just called Mastercard and got a new card number. I'm still skittish about my last round of identity theft.

And they say all of this is because Sony disabled "Other OS."

But remember, the guys doing this are "fighting large corporations for the little guy".

Apparently, fighting large corporations means ass fucking the little guy in the process.
