I have a couple security cameras at my house. No alarm though.
My father-in-law has about a half-dozen cameras, set to record movement. It's the X10-Cam stuff that used to advertise everywhere on the Internet. I think he can set it to send email to himself when there's movement, so he can view it from work.
If you want a police response to a break-in, I think one of the commercial security systems would be best.

I got a letter in the mail from Time Warner yesterday, apparently they are trying out home security now for $14.95/month (starting at...).
I was planning on giving them a call. I wouldn't mind having the doors and windows alarmed.

Actually, the person I'm researching this for just wants passive alarm type stuff. Door sensors and two motion sensors with loud alarm in the attic type thing. Nothing fancy and nothing too hard to use. Oh, and no monthly monitoring costs or features. Just plain old noise if someone opens a door or walks in a room.

Yeah, that's the sort of alarm I'd want.
It causes burglars to run just as quickly, and there's no monthly fee.

I saw a little thing on TV for like 10 bucks that ran on a small battery... it was just 2 small pieces that you applied to window and frame (door and jam, whatever) and it made a piercing cry when contact was broken.

Just plain old noise if someone opens a door or walks in a room.
Buy a dog. My parents had a dog that would bark everytime someone came to the door and when UPS truck went by. For some reason the dog could tell the difference between a UPS truck and any other truck. It was weird.
Couple that with a couple flood lights on a motion sensor and you have a pretty secure house (IMO).

I saw those. Bell & Howell alarms. They're all over eBay, $10 for a 4-pack. There are generic versions at $5 for an 8-pack.
There was a 12 piece system for $19.99 or something like that that I liked better. I found it when I was looking up the Bell & Howell alarms a couple years ago. I can't find it now though. I was going to buy them to play jokes on my cousins. I was going to alarm random stuff in their house. Bathroom doors, cabinets, boxes of cereal, shoes, a pillow, etc.
Each piece operates independantly. If you were expecting the alarm, you could probably smash it with a hammer in 2 seconds. But if you weren't expecting it, it'd probably scare you into leaving.

I am having ADT installed this week. Four door monitors, one window monitor and two motion detectors. Initial price $725.00 and monthly monitoring for $34.95. Never had this before but we felt we owed our clients a little more security.
