Occasionally I jam with what you might call an amateur garage band. I've long had the hankering for a piece of software that could analyze a sound file, say an mp3 of a Rush tune, and extract the notes for the bass part.

Now, as with everything I think about doing, I'm pretty sure this has been tried and done before. I just don't know where to find it. So I'm screwing around with an open-source sound file editor. Right now I'm just trying to get the damn thing to build "out of the box," so to speak, and it's annoying the crap out of me.

Anybody got any bright ideas?

Nine Inch Nails just released their single in a format that some Apple software can use for peeps to make remixes.

So... I guess the answer is to get an Apple.

There's an audio tool available on a certain p2p network that has 50 times more functionality than I could ever figure out, so that could be an option, too.

Yeah, Garage Band for Apple. What I'm doing is slightly different, I think.

You may want to ask my brother tomorrow night. He does a lot of music/electronics stuff.

It does OK, I guess. It's at least as good as anything I would have homebrewed.
