How much does a good new laptop cost? I got mine from the company I used to work for about 10 years ago and I was just wondering. I only need it for school work, online, pictures, and e-bay.

Easily under $2k for what you need. I'd say between $1k and $1.5k.

Laptops run more a lot more expensive than a similarly powered PC.

Heck, you could go less than $1,000. I think Walmart has one for $650 or so.

If that's TRUELY all you want it for, Catt is right. Sub $750 is possible.

Watch DVD's on airplanes. At that point you need decent video and audio. And an extra battery, which in '99 ran about $100.

I didn't even think about that - I just need to be able to do my homework (if I can't get it done before I go) for this trip oversea. Watching a DVD on the plane might be a good idea:)

In my opinion, even the $700ish laptops will play a DVD good enough for plane viewing.

Ditto.

Except you will need to check the battery life.

Pentium M (not Mobile, or Pentium, 4M, etc) chips have massive battery life, but still sell at a premium
