Was gonna do Detroit, an hour away, then in jest I said "how bout toronto, we could take a train and make a weekend of it, hahaha" and the wife thought it sounded like a good idea.
So I'm kinda locked in to that.

In '99 I got a passport in 3 days for a price of, like, $75.
There are passport expediting companies out there.

Just made my hotel reservations in Toronto. Got this message in the confirmation email:
Alert: Beginning January 8, 2007, passports will be required for air and sea travel to/from the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. The requirement extends to land border crossings January 1, 2008.
