It wasn't until I had a kid did I realize that "Bah Bah Black Sheep," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," and the Alphabet song (A B C D E F G... Now I know my ABC's, next time won't you sing with me.) all use the same melody.

Once I realized that, I'd combine songs when singing to my little girl:
Bah bah black sheep have you any wool?
H I J L M N O P
Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky
Now I know my ABC's
Yes sir yes sir three bags full

It screwed me up through, because when I was learning the other verses to Bah Bah Black Sheep I had trouble memorizing the 7 recipiants of the rainbow sheep's wool, so when I completed it insteald of going to the Bah Bah part I'd sing the ende of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

I'll go ahead and lay a spoiler on you:

"Mary Had a Little Lamb" is the same tune as "London Bridge."

I use these facts to do a fun little bit at parties where there are kids. I bring out the guitar and say I've been working on a few songs. Then I'll play and sing a few bars of "Black Sheep," and then I'll say "here's another one," and play and sing "Twinkle, Twinkle," and so forth. Usually the kids say "Those are the same song!" and I'll pull a Vanilla Ice and say, "no they're different, listen...."

Then I'll say "OK, here's 'Old McDonald'" and start playing "Black Sheep." It's a riot.

Sometimes I play "Stairway to Heaven" and sing the words to "Freebird." That one isn't as popular, but it cracks me up.

The tunes aren't the same, but you can interchange the words to Amazing Grace, House of the Rising Sun, and Gilligan's Island at will. That's always fun.

I'll have to try that one.

The similarity in this case is the songs have the same meter.

Dag-nabbit! You weren't supposed to *really* move it to the music section. It fouls my joke!
Do I have to 'splain that my lameness is due to the fact that I enjoy mixing up childrens songs, not due to my posting in the most appropriate forum?

So much for subtle.
