So I just saved Penn from a gang of trolls and orcs. He was in a cage which I opened, but now what do I do with him? Does he reward me? Do I have to ask for it? Should I escort him somewhere?

free him. (one of the orcs will have a key)
ask him his "destination"
if you can gate, or feel like hiking, tell him "I will take thee"
Reward will be something like 200-500 gold.

Be sure to open that chest though, they should have some good scrolls, gold, and a magic item or two.
(it will be locked and trapped, so unlock and telekensis)

I looted the chest. Killed all the baddies and Penn is irritating me. He tells me he wants to go to Cove, but won't follow me.

Shit, never saw that. Sadly, I think I checked this thread twice for instructions.
Still, I saved 4 of these trapped guys in the last hour. Of the two I tried to escort, both were killed on the way. I said I'd take them, not protect them...
I think Herman might need to learn how to ID magic items.

I have an alt named "Wand"
He sits in my house and gets logged on when I fill up the magic loot chest.
100 item id and 100 arms lore.
I also have a lot of id wands that are piling up because of it. I'll throw you a 100 charge when I get a chance. I'll be on steam tonight, ping me.

They will follow you through a gate, FYI.
Though the epic walk across the continent might be a challenge.

If you kill them, they have dick. About 10% of what you'd get if you escort. If you can gate, you don't even need the key. Just say you'll take them, stand next to the cage and gate. They'll follow.
