"Bank" runs off with 790billion in EO.

Another article.

I always wondered who would put there money in such a thing.
It's not me, it's someone else.

Shit's been happening at least as long as UO has been around. This is why TKV, in its current incarnation, never ever trusted peeps we didn't personally know.

EVE players, especially those who lost money in the process, are naturally furious. But there are no real-world laws to govern virtual treachery, and thus far, the powers that be at EVE Online haven't taken action against Cally.

Are players not directly effected really upset? Somehow I doubt it. And I doubt CCP will do anything about it at all, nor do I think they should. This is part of the game. This game is very PvP, not just fighting PvP but social and economic PvP. I'm sure CCP is loving this.

Will the uproar mean that offline legal systems might start taking online crooks seriously? The jury's still out.

Not a chance. First of all because all the "stolen" money is just bytes being shifted around, and they all belong to CCP both before and after the "theft". Secondly, if game currency was actually determined to have a real value, it would make a huge tangled mess of everything. If you accept something of value you pay income taxes, no matter whether it was cash or not. It'd be really messy if people had to start having to pay the IRS a percentage of the real-world value of the in-game currency they earn. Game companies will just shut it all down and create gaming systems without currencies and tradeable objects if it comes to that.
