Mechwarrior Online - F2P

Oh wow, this could be a fun game. I downloaded yesterday and played around a little bit. i love Mech games but rarely are they the slower moving, tactical shooter like this one. So if your a fan of that quick twitch shooters and running around then this might not be for you. I fell in love with an Xbox game called Chromehounds some years ago, and it is much like this game.
First off, its free to play so it has that going for it (or not). And right now its in beta and should be live by the end of the summer the developer claims. Its an 8v8, PvP, FPS and it looks beautiful! They are going to expand to 12v12 very soon which will make for good full on battles. The maps are various and they are coming out with many more all the time.
The Mechs are of all types from smaller quick scout-like pee-shooters to huge lumbering armored powerhouses. Just like League of Legends there are four free to use Mechs all the time and many others that you can buy or customize to your liking by putting your own weapons and such on. You earn credits after every battle and can use those to purchase other mechs or parts of your choice.
Obviously becase its free to play there are microtransactions that can be done. So you can spend real world money to fast track your mech builds but i've read many peoples comments in their forums claiming they haven't spent any money on the game and feel good about their chances.
Now because its still in beta the developers are still trying to work out a good matchmaking system. They don't have ELO equivillent so a complete noob could be teamed up or go against someone thats been playing for a while now.
So if anyone is interested in playing this lemme know. It could be a good game to watch for as they keep adding content all the time.

WORLD CHAMPIONS!!
Between League of Legends, my Steam list of games, and real life I don't see how I could add another game, free or not.
If you start playing this does that mean you'll be down to one night a week for LoL?

This game isn't on Steam by the way. So here is the link again for those interested

WORLD CHAMPIONS!!
Bought a mech. WOOT! I went with a medium. It's pretty weak though. Way weaker than the free ones you can use. But, I read somewhere that you don't get some XP when using free ones. So, we'll see.
Upgrade options are confusing.
You have hardpoints, slots and weight to worry about. That I have noticed so far. Out of the box, my mech is at it's max in weight. So I can't add anything to it. The first upgrade that I noticed was upgrading it's armor. The upgraded armor is lighter, so, I can equip more of it increasing my armor. Or, I can add more weaons, etc. I haven't started upgrading him yet.
I went with the medium because I found that it can be just as fast as a light, but bring a little more damage and armor. But it's acceleration suffers and it doesn't come standard with jump jets. Might not be able to wear them at all. But if the assault mech can, I don't see why this one can't. My plan with it is to keep the speed up there, add more firepower, lower my armor to make room for more weapons.
The game is fun and would be PERFECT for joystick play. However, you'd be as competitive in this game with a joystick as someone playing Counter Strike with a game controller. So that sucks. Would be cool if they could have some 'joy stick only' servers/games.
On their website, they have a Training Grounds tab and in there are some 5 minute tutorial videos. Watch them. It will help you decide what mech you want, what weapons, etc.
Lastly, we are making a TON of extra CB as new players. If you look at the end game totals for rewards, game play equals about 60k, cadet bonus, 325k. We need to figure out how to extend our cadet status as long as possible.

Lastly, no matter what you are driving, keep moving and use cover. Even the biggest assaults can be taken down by scouts running circles around it. It can't turn its torso fast enough to target the fast bot. A couple of them crisscrossing ensures a kill. Reverse side, don't leave your assaults alone.

This is a good beginners guide that will give you some general knowledge of the game. It is a little dated so some of the info might be incorrect, but for the most part is still relevant to what you should know. The link will need to be downloaded.

This is a sight that will give detailed info on all the Mechs and a Mechlab where you can experiment with builds. i don't quite get all the info on here right now, but eventually we will know and it will become more useful i'm sure.

WORLD CHAMPIONS!!
I played this for a few days when it first came out.
I was pretty awful. I remember my kill death ratio over two days of play was close to 2 kills to 200 deaths, IIRC.
I'm pretty sure this was the game where I accidently killed twice as many of my own team as of the enemy. It's friendly-fire enabled, right?

Yes, FF is on. Why would you think you were supposed to shoot the green/blue guys, instead of the red ones?! Especially when you start the game standing right next to the green/blue guys.
"Damn it!! They spawned me right in the middle of the enemy team again!!"
And for you to score a kill in this game, you have to send some pretty concentrated fire at the target. So, you wouldn't have just 'winged' an ally and accidentally kill him. You would have had to lock on to them and relentlessly lay into them!

Close. It's more like:
* Is it near me?
-> Yes Shoot
-> No, shoot anyway, miss, hit teammate instead
* Repeat
Planetside 2 I'm having a hard time with friend or foe identification, but I didn't have that problem in MWO. I just am a very very bad shot and kept hitting teammates instead of the enemy on accident.

Yeah, it would be more accurate to say I helped the enemy finish off more teammates than I actually killed of the enemy.And for you to score a kill in this game, you have to send some pretty concentrated fire at the target. Well, don't hope for more of the same of what you were used to, Troy. MWO is okay, but it's very much different from the old games. At least when I tried it, it was a much simplified game. More Mech Warrior Lite.
"Senator, I served in Mech Warrior 4. I knew Mech Warrior 4. Mech Warrior 4 was a favorite of mine. Senator, MWO is no Mech Warrior 4."

So far i'm seeing that after you buy your Mech the first upgrades are just about always Endosteel structure and Double Heatsinks. Every build and all mechs will benefit from these upgrades.
The Ferro-Fibrous armor upgrades are only good on light mechs and some mediums cause they are in need of the extra weight for other things. Just about all others don't need the FF upgrade because the space they take up is to valuable.
