Reddit thread
I read like 20 answers, and they were all wrong.
Civilization 2
Elite
are the only acceptable answers.

Someone on there already said Homeworld, which is correct, but they are also talking about how great the remaster is, which makes them idiot savants.

I'd say Pirates! Gold, but I could win almost any game with fencing alone.

I can narrow it down to four that were the absolute best they could be and that I personally found to be masterpieces of their time:
M.U.L.E. (1983)
Elite (1984)
Blood Bowl (1995)
Advanced Civilization (1996)

I forgot about Pirates! I loved that game.
And Bard's Tale.

M.U.L.E. was way ahead of its time. Blood Bowl, ugh, that game gives me vision of miniatures hell.

M.U.L.E. was awesome. If I had a copy I'd play it right now.
Half-Life was the perfect game at the right time. No other FPS engaged me the way it did. When you were sitting in the tram in the opening and credits were rolling, you could actually feel gaming changing.
The first three Bard's Tale games were great.
Team Fortress 2 was the best multi-game when it hit. (Then the dumb hats came along.)
I thought the No One Lives Forever series were ridiculously well done.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here.

I liked Zork, but I didn't find it perfect.

HL2 was pretty bad ass.
Portal 2 was amazing. I dare you to hate on Cave Johnson.

I haven't actually had the chance to try either. If you do I'd be curious to hear what you think.

Did you guys know that Blood Bowl 2 is coming out in less than 2 weeks?
I remember the first, very fun!

Technically Blood Bowl 3. The "first" that was really second was okay. I still prefer the original, though.
But yeah, I'll eventually be getting 2 (3).
