The nature of madness, and mass hysteria

The recent Tesla bullshit.
It's falling off now, unless I'm mistaken. If feels like peeps are getting identified, and named and shamed, and it begins to put a lid on it when "Oh I may actually get caught."
In 4 or 8 or 12 years if and when it all turns around these same people are going to completely forget the madness they let sweep them up these last few weeks, and say "I'd never be that insane over something so dumb."
So instead of making me go to brain school for ten years, how can we explain these clouds of insanity that seem to sweep over our country from time to time? And if we can pinpoint a cause, like "Well Elon is a nazi even though I can't back that up in any way except OH I CAN REMEMBER WHEN HE DID THE LITERAL NAZI SALUTE yeahs he's toitally a nazi so i gotta paint swaastikas on stuff," then can't we look for first causes, and then tie that person to a tree and burn them alive?
