Where is all the leather?

36 million cows are slaughtered in the USA, annually.
A cow will produce 50+ square feet of leather.
That's over a billion square feet of leather produced, annually. Pants are 2-3 square feet. Boots are 5-6 square feet. (I don't understand that, but google sez so)
How is leather clothing not cheap, and not the main fashion textile (is it a textile) in the country? Where's all the leather going? Who is keeping the price high? Google sez China is buying most of it. That's bullshit, fuck those guys. The USA needs to be dripping in leather.
