Do you own a tool kit?

Shovel? Hammer?

Are you capable of doing any random manual labor task for yourself, or do you pay someone to tighten a cabinet knob?

I can do the basics. I can do what you've listed, and have all those tools. I've replaced toilets, installed a dishwasher, etc.

But I'm no expert. At the end of the day, I tend to pay people to do things.

I'd consider someone who can and has replaced a toilet "handy."

Still in this audiobook, and there's a passage where they're pounding things with a rock, because not a single house out of the six owned a hammer.

I mean... How the fuck.

That does seem odd. I've got two hammers, and a rubber one. I'm pretty sure I've owned a hammer ever since I lived on my own, and at least basic tools.

Before homeownership I couldn't do a lot. Now I've installed sinks, a shitter (and replaced the wax rings on two), fixed appliances, electrical work, built decks, laid hardwood flooring, put in a pool, installed a bidet seat (which was awesome), etc.

I have a small set of tools though. The family lends them out when needed, so I lean on the older families who have built up their inventory over going out and purchasing my own. I do have all the basics and some exotic ones.

This wasn't about your prostate tools.

I replaced the igniter in my gas oven, this week. New one cost $30 on amazon, versus hundreds for a fix-it guy, and $600+ for a new oven.

Took me two short youtube instructional videos to teach me how.

Youtube is awesome, I've fixed so many things using it in the past several years.

Instructional video was like "your old ignitor plugs in "here*" and I was like "nuh uh." Thus the second video.

Which still didn't show the right spot, so I followed the wire and found it myself.

Also took the door apart to clean the inside of the glass. WHich begs the question.... how does so much shit get inside the oven door?

Ditto.

If YouTube ever gets wiped out, it'll be like when the Library of Alexandria burned.

Did you say that somewhere? If so, apologies. I have no recollection of that.

One of those things I've said here and there across the Internet, over the last decade or so.
