This story doesn't fit the offended area or the gender area, so we need a gay thread.

Marvel introducing a gay Captain America for Gay Pride month.

No issue with gay characters. There should be gay characters because there are gay people and they deserve representation. However, why don't they ever create characters to represent folks, and instead, always seem to simply use existing characters/names. Stealing headlines is the obvious reason why they do that, but combine that with the image in that article, and doesn't this feel like exploitation instead of representation?

I mean, they could have went Robin Williams with the character, and instead went Nathan Lane?

Kellogg introduces cereal celebrating the alphabet people.

Uh, what's the goal here? What is Kellogg's hoping to achieve? Do they really believe their box of cereal is going to change minds?

"Man I hated them queers, but this cereal is so fucking good!"

Isn't this really just exploitative and divisive? I don't remember eating any cereal out of a box that said, "Hey, thanks for keeping the human race in existence with your heterosexuality." :D

Isn't Kellogg's just trying to make a buck off of gay pride?

I assume a message of love + inclusion for underrepresented people.

I don't think that's the goal.

Representation and acceptance matter.

Based on coverage, I don't think it was a message that was received. Also, I would strongly argue alphabet people are not only not underrepresented, but are probably overrepresented right now.

That's not to say they don't still face hate and ignorance, just that society is well into its usual overcorrection.
TheCatt wrote: Thu May 27, 2021 2:22 pm I don't think that's the goal.
Call me cynical, but I see very few examples in corporate America of actual concern or caring about our society and the people in it. Why a limited edition run? Why not a national advertising campaign to explain the limited edition and the message? How about giving full or part of the proceeds to some alphabet charity?
TheCatt wrote: Thu May 27, 2021 2:22 pm Representation and acceptance matter.
Yep. Nobody here is arguing it doesn't.

Maybe stop reading places that source from breitbart.
According to reporting by Breitbart and the picture of the box the cereal Kellogg’s is using some of their most famous iconic cartoon characters including “Tony the Tiger, Toucan Sam, and Snap, Crackle, and Pop”. You can even see a Frosted Mini Wheat holding a rainbow flag with a triangle on it.

To be fair, it's easier to run a company when your focus is just the bottom line, which shareholders typically want.

Ha! As if breitbart is less credible than CNN or FOX...

I saw a picture of the box on FB, searched for a news story, and that was one of the only sites that popped up.

Fuck shareholders.

Ok, not really, but yeah, kinda. The absolute focus upon the bottom line and nothing else hasn't been great for the world.

If C suite greed via the exploitation of sweatshop workers, natural resources, the erosion of the middle class, the disenfranchisement of so many that this country is teetering on socialism, and so on end up being just a blip, I'll agree.

The recent developments in Big Oil suggest you are not all wrong, but plastic now being more prevalent in oceans than fish prove I'm not all wrong too.

Hundreds of years of capitalism has mostly been good.

One could argue that whatever changed, happened in the 1970s (Bretton Woods, GATT, etc?)

Depends on your point of view. I do not wish to discount the awesome things corporations have done for society, but not everyone has fared well all the time.

That is fascinating.

What would life be like if those lines stayed together?

Imagine workers getting a 50% pay raise, and the stock market being worth less, and fewer financial billionaires + millionaires.

Mexico-Costa Rica soccer game halted briefly due to fans chanting anti-gay shit.

Why during a soccer game?

So Mexicans are pretty anti-gay? Who knew? If only they were white, then the MSM would cover it endlessly and declare it the greatest threat to humanity... :P

There may not be a so-called gay agenda, but those people sure seem to be tired of it.
