I'm listening.
I use
ProtonVPN at the moment. It has clients for all relevant platforms (including iOS and Android), support split-tunneling (so some apps go through VPN and others do not), and p2p stuff.

They're claiming Privacy does NOT reduce your speed.

I think it's physically impossible to add more packet hops and not lose speed.

Same.
ProtonVPN I lose a decent amount of speed. Surfingwise, it's not very noticeable. But p2p it seems to max out around 50Mbps.

I recently switched to ExpressVPN. I was going to switch to NordVPN, but they do not support split tunneling, which I need due to local network access.
Both do have application-level kill switches, which is nice. ProtonVPN did not have that.

Is it still working well? I see that they have a true "no logs" policy based on seizure of servers by authorities. (Source: CNET)
$7/month, but is it really worth it? I'm doing nothing illegal, just standard banking, stocks, health care, porn, etc.
I'm debating if I really "need" a VPN. I could always just use my work one

Probably not in that situation.
But yes, still working well.

I've literally never heard of the first two, which makes me think they are FBI/CIA plants.
I use ExpressVPN. I tried ProtonVPN before, but it didn't work nearly as well.

Wired - no vpn - 950Mbps up/down (google fiber)
Wired - VPN - 555 up/800down (single test) - In browsing around, I really can't tell a difference. Sometimes a request gets hung up a little bit more. For, uh, file transfers, things do seem slower, but I can still get about 100 Mbps

What does a VPN allow you to do? I know it's encrypting everything, but from a 'use' perspective. For instance, when you connect to work, what does it give you access to, and how? Reason I'm asking is, I have a NAS device that I want to be able to access while on the road. Ideally, I'd have access to it as a mapped drive, just like I do when at home.

I mean, from a networking perspective, that would be accessible to you if you had the proper credentials.
Nothing different than when I'm working from home and access all the servers here.

You would want something like
