Yeah, I buy that.

How many people are in Hollywood, not because of talent, but because they were lucky enough to be born with connections?

And the people who ended up in car wrecks or with illness that kept them from being successful, on the other side. As luck goes, I'm almost certainly on the "pretty lucky" side of things.

I would agree that random chance certainly has a seat at the table, but you have to admit that there's a shitload of conscious, bad decisions that get called "bad luck."

I've made a ton of bad decisions without many bad repercussions

Getting teen pregnant isn't bad luck. Not putting in a little effort in free public school isn't bad luck. Getting caught robbing the liquor store and having a criminal record keeping you from getting a meaningful job isn't bad luck. But, all of these things are usually ascribed to "bad luck."

Really? Cuz that always felt like rolling the dice.

The other examples, are clearly not luck.

Outside of rape, one can choose to not teen fuck. Everyone knows the consequences, and if you can't deal with the possible outcome, then it's a bad decision.

I'm not going to agree with you on this one. People are hardwired to fuck, teen or otherwise.

Then they can do it before they're responsible and ready and ruin their lives with all that bad luck.

I would suspect that they conflating "luck" with outside the box thinking. Take the very top successful people... they more often than not didn't even finish college. If following the teachers' instructions were the key to success, then everyone with a degree would be successful. Don't get me wrong, it's useful for those unable to think outside the box.

It's a mathematical model, not a study on reality and outcomes.

But yes, doing well in school only goes so far on life. I've always looked at it as something that opens doors. I think people put too much stock into education, other than showing that people can focus on boring things

Yeah, I think when it came to distilling down the model they had to come up with something other than "talent" and settled on "luck".

"But having a bad brain is bad luck."

Luck is the residue of preparedness.

I don't know, why did the plane crash?
