I think you can shoot the standard 223 out of an M4. I think there could be a potential issue with cycling, though.

M-4 is a "carbine" version of the M-16 and shoots the same ammo (5.56mm sometimes aka .223 but I think they're slightly different).
Private Pyle was shooting an M-14 chambered in 7.62mm Full. Metal... JACKET.
