Barbie (2023)

Remember when Amy Schumer was going to be Barbie? She had to drop out due to "scheduling conflicts".

Anne Hathaway is now set to play Barbie in 2020.

Interesting that Schumer had scheduling conflicts with a film that hasn't even started filming due to a bomb that's currently sitting unrented on dollar shelves in video stores.

I'm sure there weren't other factors like her shooting her mouth off everywhere and her fame dive bombing.

I believe that because she has no idea what she's doing on a PC.

I hope this movie is empowering to young girls.

To be fair, she was much more interested in fucking.

It's just because I think they'll be over-the-top and clumsy with that exact idea.

I agree, I was just teasing.

It'll especially be clumsy if it's being written now in the #metoo era.

I was exposed to the trailer. It looks like there's a chance it could be interesting, in an existential-terror kind of way.

That may have not been their intention.

WHen we went to see Oppenheimer, there were lots of young girls/women completely dolled up (get it?) in pink and dresses and heels there for Barbie. Been a long time since I saw that kind of fan base at a theater.

I can't say I didn't expect the movie to do this well, but it's definitely resonating or something.

It's sort of amazing that this cash cow was never exploited previously.

Well, there were 16 animated movies (that I assume were direct to DVD? or similar?)

And... it apparently took a massive amount of time to make this one happen
A live-action Barbie film was announced in September 2009 by Universal Pictures with Laurence Mark producing. Development began in April 2014, when Sony Pictures acquired the film rights. Following multiple writer and director changes and the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie, the rights were transferred to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018. Robbie was cast in 2019, and Gerwig was announced as director and co-writer with Baumbach in 2021. The rest of the cast were announced in early 2022. Filming took place primarily at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in England and on the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles from March to July 2022.

Barbie premiered at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023, and was theatrically released in the United States on July 21 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
That was almost DOA. (Really? Amy S?)

Right? Lizzo would be a better choice.

I enjoyed it, but the ending was just meh. Meta + Self-aware, but still managing to be funny.
