"Everyone's a little gay"

Post by Leisher »

Because nobody can be just straight, a reporter has to try and question if Captain America is bi.

People want Else to get a girlfriend.

It's funny that the nutjobs on the left always scream to the nutjobs on the right that "they're not going to make you gay!", yet famous characters' sexuality seems to be a big issue these days. I wonder who makes it an issue...?

And I'm not bashing gays or gay rights or anything. I'm just annoyed by all the people who want to reinvent everything. Diversity is fine, but let's try to make the percentages in our fictional characters match the percentages in real life.

This is always going to be tricky.
1) How many homosexuals are there? No one knows, seems like 1-2%? some estimates go up to 10% though.
2) When you have a populace that's the majority, people target that majority. So majorities are disproportionately represented.

Your second example is wrong. There was nothing in the first movie to indicate if Elsa was straight, gay, or whatever. To give her a boyfriend is just as much "want[ing] to reinvent everything" as to give her a girlfriend.

I do agree with your overall point as far as some people wanting to constantly rewrite established characters - like Captain America - is tiresome. But I disagree with you in that I think just writing a gay character is a fine thing to do.

Right now it's completely impossible to know. There's still places where if you are gay you have to keep it hidden to avoid persecution. There are families that would disown their gay sons and daughters if they had any clue about what they really are. There are older gay people who have hidden the truth for decades and will likely go to their graves faking being straight because they don't want to get kicked out of their church.

Once no one honestly gives a shit anymore about gay versus straight - then a few decades after that when all the old people that still secretly give a shit but don't talk about it have died - only then can we finally get a real percentage. Until then every number is unfounded speculation.

Personally I suspect that about 5% of the population is completely gay, 35% of the population is completely straight, and the other 60% is somewhere in between on a curve shaped much like a cumulative distribution curve with a high standard deviation. That seems most likely to me given the available information. But really it's just unfounded speculation, of course.

So fiction only gets to be so fictional?

I don't have anything to say; I just think it's amusing that the thread title keeps getting longer.

I hadn't even noticed that each reply gets its own subject. Huh.

Is there really a fucking sigma sign in the title?

EDIT: How disappointing.

If I get irritated about that word filter like 14 or 15 more times, I might actually get motivated enough to change it.

There's clearly nothing wrong with it.

I forgot this thread existed.
But I disagree with you in that I think just writing a gay (Not that there's anything wrong with that) character is a fine thing to do.
No sir. Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about not writing gay characters. My Elsa example was simply used because it was a news item recently. Not because I think adding a gay character is wrong.

I was simply bashing folks who want to retcon everything to fit their agenda.

Kind of like how people are making a stink about Marvel "white washing" the role of the Ancient One by casting Tilda Swinton, but that's a different topic...

Heh, I was wondering when you'd notice that bit I sneaked in there. :P

I still think that if Elsa is gay it's not a retcon. There was no indication of her orientation in the first movie at all. And contrary to what Hollywood usually does, not every gay person is all about being gay all the time as a primary character trait. For the rare well-written gay character it won't even be noticeable until there's a natural reason to reference it, like introducing someone to their gay boyfriend or whatever.

Sure, some gay men are effeminate, not that there's anything wrong with that. But really most aren't; you won't know they are gay until they choose to let you know they are gay.

Yeah again, I just posted that story because it was recent. Truth be told, aside from some good songs I thought Frozen sucked. The live show they do at Disney (Hollywood Studios) now is MILES better than that movie.

IMHO, the best gay character on TV is Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He's a normal guy, which is exactly what he needs to be, and his sexuality is barely referenced. He's not prancing around or talking with a lisp or doing crazy things, etc. (Remember Jack from Will and Grace?)
